Exploring the Beauty of Sinri Shrine in Dangjin

While planning a trip to Dangjin, I stumbled upon the name Sinri Shrine.
Just a few images from my search sparked a desire to visit.
Upon arriving at Sinri Shrine, I opened the car door and was struck by the exotic scenery, wondering, "Is this really Korea?"
A uniquely designed building towered amidst the lush green lawns, and that was the Martyrdom Art Museum.
I visited the Martyrdom Art Museum first.
As I stepped inside, the history of Sinri Shrine unfolded through paintings and writings, captivating the visitors with the allure of Catholicism.
Sinri was the largest Catholic community in the Naepo region during the Joseon Dynasty.
The stories of five saints, including Bishop Antonio Daveluy and Father Ometre, are documented here, revealing how they maintained their faith and ultimately became martyrs.
To enter the museum, all food must be consumed outside, and pets should be left outside or only allowed with their owners.
Climbing to the highest point of the museum, I took in the expansive view of Sinri Shrine, a serene retreat in the city.
The shrine's mascot, a cross, welcomes visitors throughout the year.
While admiring the various artworks inside the museum, my religious knowledge deepened, though I felt a heaviness in my heart.
Today, we live in an era where we can freely choose our beliefs, but in the past, people suffered simply for holding faith outside of what the state allowed.
The weight of faith was not just a matter of belief but also a readiness to face death, which was sobering and regretful.
I highly recommend the museum as a cool indoor destination to escape the summer heat.
After leaving the museum, I leisurely explored the shrine.
Throughout the shrine, there are many spots that make you pause as you walk.
White chapels honoring the five saints are scattered across the vast lawn, where visitors often stop to take photos.
Seeing families and friends smiling and taking pictures together, I felt that Sinri Shrine was not just a serious place but a healing travel destination.
The church remains open until 5 PM, allowing me to reflect on myself for a moment.
Even in the sweltering heat, the shrine brought a strange calmness.
Learning about history, reflecting on myself, and capturing a photo with good people made for a meaningful day.
I highly recommend Sinri Shrine in Dangjin as a weekend getaway.
