I was curious about the atmosphere of the Gyeongbuk Provincial Sports Festival opening ceremony, so I attended. The 2026 event was truly larger than expected and filled with attractions.
In particular, the opening ceremony featured the athlete procession, the lighting of the torch, and a fireworks show, followed by the Black Eagles airshow, a drone show, and performances by celebrities, creating an atmosphere akin to a concert that could engage everyone in Gyeongbuk.
Attending just one part of this event was enough to leave me satisfied.
Upon arrival, the festive atmosphere was palpable. I arrived early, before the ceremony began, and the area was already bustling with people.
The line for the tickets was quite long, and I felt a bit disappointed that the seating was limited to 2,500. I didn't expect such a high level of participation from the Gyeongbuk citizens.
Fans of Lee Chan-won and Jang Min-ho were present, along with many citizens watching the event on screens outside!
Before the ceremony started, Nora Jo performed, which could also be seen on the large outdoor screen at the provincial office.
The parking lot was nearly full, and shuttle buses kept arriving, with many families in attendance.
Tickets were distributed from 4:30 PM, and when seating capacity was reached, a second round of ticket distribution occurred at 7:30 PM.
If seats became available due to VIPs or athletes leaving, it was announced that people could sit in those spots. Like me, those who received tickets could enter and watch the event.
The variety of events was impressive, making me feel that this was not just a sports festival, but a full-fledged celebration!
The Black Eagles airshow was a highlight, with the sound of fighter jets suddenly filling the air. Looking up, I saw the Black Eagles soaring through the sky.
The formation flying and the white smoke trails were breathtaking, and the audience erupted in applause during the crossover flights!
Especially when they formed a heart shape, everyone around took out their phones to capture the moment, thinking, "This is something you must see live." The reality was far more overwhelming than any picture.
After the Black Eagles, the atmosphere settled before the opening ceremony officially began.
As each city and county's athletes entered, cheers erupted from the crowd, making it quite entertaining. The excitement was particularly high when popular regions were announced.
The torch lighting moment was a highlight as darkness fell, with the torchbearer appearing to music. The final lighting moment, with flames shooting up, brought the atmosphere to a peak.
The latter part of the ceremony felt like a concert, especially with the response to the performances by popular trot singers like Lee Chan-won and Jang Min-ho, creating an electrifying atmosphere.
With cheers, clapping, and phone flashes, it truly felt like a local festival. The entire stadium erupted in applause, reaching a thrilling climax.
