A Day Trip to Iksan: Enjoying Flavor and Style in Hwangdeung and Hamyeol

Enjoying both taste and style,
A day trip to Hwangdeung and Hamyeol in Iksan.
Located in Iksan, Hwangdeung and Hamyeol are very familiar places to me.
Hamyeol is where my maternal grandmother lived.
I’m excited to explore the charm of Hwangdeung and Hamyeol that I used to visit often as a child.
Let’s dive into the day trip filled with taste and history.
First stop: Hanil Restaurant
Address: 106 Hwangdeung-ro, Hwangdeung-myeon, Iksan, Jeonbuk
Operating Hours: Daily from 11:00 AM to 7:30 PM
* Closed every Monday
* Break time from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM
* Last order at 7:00 PM
Hanil Restaurant is famous for its 'Yukhoe Bibimbap'.
I've been coming here since my college days when I was on a tight budget, and it has remained a delicious spot for over 10 years.
Despite rising prices, Hanil Restaurant still offers reasonable prices. Let’s head inside!
The interior of Hanil Restaurant has undergone changes, and now all seating is table-style, eliminating the need to remove shoes.
We usually post on weekdays, but today we visited on a Sunday, and to our surprise, we had to wait.
After about 30 minutes, we were assigned to Room 2, which is not a private room but rather a designated space for guests.
The basic side dishes include three varieties. While there used to be many side dishes in the past, focusing on the main menu is not a bad approach, especially for meat lovers like myself.
In the center is 'Cheonsachae', a clear seaweed often served with sashimi. It’s a delightful treat that I usually finish before the Yukhoe Bibimbap arrives.
The 'Hwangdeung Bibimbap (Yukhoe Bibimbap)' is a generous serving for only 12,000 KRW. Made with domestic Korean beef, this is one of the signature dishes of Hanil Restaurant.
Recently, the menu has been updated, and the sizes of bibimbap have been standardized to 'extra large', with a slight price increase.
For those who cannot eat raw beef, you can request 'cooked Yukhoe'.
Alongside, we had 'Seonjiguk', a refreshing soup that adds a savory taste without the typical strong smell.
After enjoying the bibimbap, I recommend taking a spoonful of the soup when you feel a bit thirsty—it’s simply delightful!
The restaurant operates efficiently, and your order comes out quickly, making it a satisfying dining experience.
Next up is the Hwangdeung Stone Mountain Observatory, open daily from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
The observatory is a new attraction, so make sure to check the address to find it easily.
Hwangdeung Stone Quarry is historically significant as the first quarry in Korea, dating back to the Joseon Dynasty.
Today, it continues to operate and offers a magnificent view that enhances the experience.
The Hwangdeung Stone Product Exhibition Hall is another interesting stop where you can learn about local stone technology.
Lastly, don't miss 'Gosrak', a beautiful jar garden that is especially stunning in spring.
These lesser-known spots, along with traditional sites, make for an unforgettable trip.
If a day trip to Hwangdeung and Hamyeol feels too short, consider exploring more of Iksan’s culinary delights!
