Navigating a New Career: Life in a Fast-Paced Duty-Free Hub
My new job has been a major shift in pace, operating within an expansive environment with over 80 employees, where the vast majority of our clientele are foreigners. Working in this tax-free airport style setting means constantly being on the move, searching for products and managing stock in the storage rooms.
The intensity was so high that I jumped straight into cashier duties without much formal training. Standing for long hours organizing identical items at closing time felt like a test of endurance, leaving me with a sore neck but a sense of accomplishment. It’s a demanding role that requires quick thinking and a sharp memory.
Sweet Breaks and Comfort Food During Work
To cope with the busy schedule, I find solace in small treats. Whether it's the limited edition Dubai mochi I’ve been smitten with or a quick visit to a local fish-shaped pastry shop, these moments of indulgence are vital. My boyfriend even promises to make me these winter treats, adding a touch of humor to my long workdays.
Heartfelt Birthday Celebrations and End-of-Year Gratitude
Returning home for the year-end was the highlight of my month. My friends surprised me with a beautiful birthday cake and gifts that reminded me why I simply cannot live without them. The warmth of their letters and the sincerity of their gestures have been my survival kit throughout this challenging year.
Even my boss surprised me with a thoughtful gift, leaving me incredibly touched. Celebrating my birthday included a crowded but wonderful walk through Starfield COEX Mall (스타필드 코엑스몰) with my mother. Despite the sea of people, sharing those moments and hearing old family stories made the day feel incredibly special.
Reflections on Christmas and the Coming New Year
Christmas was a blur of fun and perhaps a bit too much celebration with my girls. While the memories are hazy and the hangovers were real, the heartfelt letters from people like Kyeong-nan remain clear and cherished. These letters are what I look forward to most as we count down the final three days until 2026.
Embracing New Tastes and Experiences in 2025
This year has also been one of personal growth in small ways, such as developing a newfound love for seafood. Starting from January 2025, I’ve expanded my palate and found joy in simple things, like the kindness of a pastry shop owner who gave me a free treat for being a regular.
As I close this chapter, I feel grateful for the ability to keep managing and moving forward. From the busy aisles of the duty-free shop to the festive lights of COEX, this year-end has been a testament to the power of love, friendship, and resilience. Merry Christmas, Happy Birthday, and a very Happy New Year to everyone!
