Exploring the Doreaul Coal Park in Goyang City: A Barefoot Experience
Welcome to Doreaul Coal Park in Goyang City!
Located at 29 Doreaul 1-ro, Deogyang-gu, Goyang-si, this neighborhood park is a hidden gem.
Initially, I was curious about the name 'Coal Park' and wondered if coal was mined in the area. However, I soon learned that 'Coal' refers not to the mineral but to the name of Lee Sin-ui (이신의), a prominent general during the Korean resistance against Japanese invasions.
As I parked my car, I noticed a separate walking path leading up to the park. There were also bicycle racks available near the entrance.
The park is equipped with restrooms and a foot-washing area, which was quite convenient. I found a dirt broom available for cleaning my feet after my walk.
The entrance path was beautifully landscaped as 'Gama-ni-gil' (가마니길), making it easy to access.
As I walked up, I pondered about General Lee Sin-ui, who was known for rallying local forces during the Imjin War and leading the first uprising in Doreaul village.
He gathered around 300 soldiers to form the 'Lee Sin-ui Creative Army' for resistance activities.
Lee Sin-ui is one of the eight notable figures from Goyang, and the name 'Doreaul' originates from the area where the resistance forces operated.
The park features a barefoot path, which I was eager to try. As someone who enjoys walking barefoot whenever possible, I decided to take off my shoes and socks.
Walking on the natural ground felt great, and I appreciated the community broom provided for keeping the path clear of leaves and stones.
While the park isn't deep in the mountains, it has a lush environment. I noticed a 'Beware of Snakes' sign, reminding me to stay cautious.
Goyang City is genuinely a nature-friendly environment!
I took a left path that resembled a clay road. The path had slight elevations, making it easier to climb.
The wooded area was dense, offering a pleasant walking experience, although I had to be careful of small stones.
As I continued my leisurely stroll, I soon reached the 'summit' of the trail, where the path widened significantly. The ground was solid and flat, making it easy to walk.
On this hot day, I began to sweat and found a shaded resting area with a roof. It seemed perfect for rainy days or sunny weather.
The park also has various exercise equipment, making it a popular spot for local residents to work out in the early morning.
The exercise area includes parallel bars, bicycles, and other equipment, providing great opportunities for fitness.
Doreaul Coal Park has been enhanced with safety mats and protective nets along the paths, ensuring a safe experience for visitors.
As I descended via the Gama-ni-gil, my feet were covered in dirt. I quickly washed them off but ended up with muddy socks, which reminded me of my time at the park.
If you're planning to walk barefoot, don't forget to bring a towel to clean your feet!
With the cicadas buzzing in August, the heat is starting to subside. Doreaul Coal Park's location is ideal for visiting nearby shopping malls before or after a stroll.
