Urban Ecological Rest Area at Sangdamsanseong: A Natural Retreat

An urban ecological rest area has been established along the old path of Sangdamsanseong in Cheongju. This project was selected as a supported initiative by the Chungcheongbuk-do Environmental Conservation Fund for 2025, and it has been completed with funding from both the provincial and city governments.

The area around Sangdamsanseong features walking paths and hiking trails, attracting many visitors. Let me introduce you to the newly created urban ecological rest area.

The urban ecological rest area is located at the entrance of the old path. If you are driving, you can park at the entrance parking lot. For public transport, get off at the Myungam Spring bus stop.

The old path connects Sangdamsanseong and Cheongju. Although it used to allow vehicle passage, it is now restricted to pedestrian traffic and serves as a walking trail leading up to the fortress.

After walking about 500 meters from the entrance, you will reach the urban ecological rest area. You can find a map that outlines the overall layout of the space, and after crossing a small bridge, you enter the area.

You will first encounter a plaza. The newly completed urban ecological rest area is now open to the public, featuring facilities such as a plaza, rest areas, and observation decks.

The plaza has seating areas, which are currently too hot to use, but once the heat subsides, it will be a great spot to relax with a mat.

Pets are welcome in the rest area, but they must be on a leash, and waste disposal is mandatory. Additionally, this area is smoke-free and alcohol-free, and visitors are expected to take their trash with them.

As I walked along the trail, I enjoyed the shade provided by the trees, making the path comfortable to walk on. One of the must-try facilities here is the net bench, which offers a cozier feel compared to regular benches.

Lying on the bench allows you to gaze at the blue sky peeking through the green trees, providing a serene view of the passing clouds.

You can also see purple flowers blooming from the planted plants along the trail. Though they are newly planted and not yet lush, they will become more vibrant over time.

Directional signs along the trail serve as guides for walkers. The deck rest area features net benches, sunbeds, and regular benches, allowing visitors to enjoy the natural scenery in a quiet forest setting.

As I walked, I noticed cute chestnuts and acorns scattered on the ground, adding to the charm of the area. Despite the summer heat, this place felt like autumn.

You can also observe streams flowing down from the mountains, making it a great spot for nature observation.

The walking paths are neatly constructed with decks that blend well with the surrounding scenery. Sunbeds and net benches are available at various spots, emphasizing relaxation in nature.

In the quaint rock garden, you can see carefully stacked stone towers and beautiful hydrangeas.

From the observation deck, you can overlook the plaza, where people appeared to be enjoying their time in comfort.

On my way out, I encountered a toad in the middle of the path. It almost got stepped on, but as it crossed the road into the forest, it was clear that the ecological environment here is thriving.

The urban ecological rest area at Sangdamsanseong is a perfect escape from the city, providing a serene space for relaxation in nature. The well-maintained walking paths make it easy to stroll while enjoying the scenic beauty.

Experience nature and enjoy a peaceful retreat at the Sangdamsanseong urban ecological rest area.
