On a beautiful day in September, as the first breath of autumn crossed paths, I returned enchanted by the beauty of the red Gothic architecture of Hapdeok Cathedral in Dangjin.

Between the red bricks lies the warmth of time, and the two spires quietly reach towards the blue sky, a place of prayer.

Hapdeok Cathedral is the cradle of Korean Catholicism and the birthplace of Catholicism in Chungcheong Province.

Wearing a black and pink dress, I came here with my daughter.

This place has been a stronghold that produced numerous martyrs during the persecution era and is deeply rooted in faith, being the most prolific source of Korean priests and clergy.

The soft light filtering through the stained glass windows between the gray walls adds to the peaceful and sacred atmosphere inside the cathedral.

The current structure of the cathedral, built in 1929 by Father Perin, features a combination of red bricks and wood, showcasing Gothic architecture with twin bell towers at the front. It feels reminiscent of a European castle.

Designated as Chungcheongnam-do Monument No. 145, Hapdeok Cathedral is also an important hub on the Catholic pilgrimage route known as the 'Beongnae Pilgrimage Route.'

At Hapdeok Cathedral, there is a slow mail box and the Hapdeok Ecological Museum located right below the House of the Holy Family Pilgrims, making it a great place to visit together.

The House of the Holy Family Pilgrims provides accommodations and meeting rooms for those who take the Beongnae Pilgrimage Route to rest for a while.

As one of the first parishes in Chungcheong Province and a representative sacred site of the Naepo Pilgrimage Route, I walked the peaceful pilgrimage path with my daughter.

Shall we meet the beautiful sights of Hapdeok Cathedral and the Beongnae Pilgrimage Route through video?

From September 11 (Friday) to September 13 (Sunday), 2026, the Dangjin National Heritage Night Walk will take place in the areas of Hapdeok Cathedral and the Dangjin Hapdeok Festival.

Experiencing the beautiful nights of Dangjin in various places will surely fill your memories with joy and beauty.
