The 2026 ChamMak Art Festival: Celebrating 175 Years of Friendship

175 years ago, a special connection began on Bigeumdo,
and it will be rekindled through art!
On June 13, Sinan County will host the
‘2026 Sinan Bigeumdo ChamMak Art Festival’
at the Lee Sedol Baduk Museum in Bigeumdo.
This festival is based on the historical story of
the French whaling ship Narval, which drifted to Bigeumdo in 1851.
The residents extended warm hospitality,
sharing champagne and makgeolli,
and building friendships.
This year marks the 175th anniversary of that meaningful encounter,
and we will recreate the emotions of that time through art and culture.
The festival will feature an opening performance capturing this historic moment,
along with creative performances such as ‘A Picturesque Bigeumdo Feast’,
classical music, vocal performances, traditional dance,
musical gala, and French chanson performances.
It will showcase a vibrant stage where Eastern and Western cultures blend.
Visitors can also enjoy various interactive programs,
including tastings of makgeolli and champagne,
‘Maktail’ experiences combining the two drinks,
and a photo zone featuring 19th-century costumes.
The festival will conclude with the traditional
‘Bigeumdo Jumping Ganggangsullae’, a representative intangible cultural heritage.
European guests and local residents will join hands,
dancing in a circle,
symbolizing unity beyond culture and borders.
The toast that began 175 years ago on Bigeumdo
has evolved into a precious legacy connecting today’s culture and art.
Through this ChamMak Art Festival, Sinan County aims
to take another step towards becoming a global island of art.
