The subtle beauty of wild cherry blossoms
Bogoksangol is known as the largest natural habitat for wild cherry blossoms in Korea.
While the Yoshino cherry trees we commonly see burst into bloom before their leaves appear, the wild cherry blossoms here feature pale pink petals and fresh green leaves sprouting simultaneously.
This creates a picturesque scene reminiscent of a watercolor painting, where the freshness of newly sprouted leaves blends with the vibrancy of the flowers.
The road to Geumsan is also a sight to behold, as cherry blossom trees line both sides, creating a beautiful flower tunnel that immerses visitors in the spring atmosphere even before they arrive.
As the breeze blows, petals scatter, creating a breathtaking view that encourages visitors to slow down and take it all in.
On April 11, the first day of the festival, the cherry blossoms at the village entrance and in the flatlands were in full bloom, over 90% open, while the wild cherry blossoms along the foothills were about 50% in bloom.
This was the perfect time to enjoy the grandeur of Yoshino cherry blossoms alongside the elegance of wild cherry blossoms.
As the wild cherry blossoms spread throughout the mountain, the density of the scenery increases over time, promising richer views as the festival progresses.
Due to limited public transportation access, most visitors arrive by car. However, parking is quite limited, so visiting on weekdays is recommended to avoid congestion. If visiting on weekends, arriving before 9 AM or after 4 PM is advisable.
The quality of festival content has significantly improved compared to previous years, with diverse experience programs ensuring that every visitor can take something home.
Many experiences are offered for free, adding to the festival's appeal.
Popular activities include making plaster air fresheners for kids and health-focused experiences for seniors.
In addition, there are over ten booths offering lemon flower syrup making, calligraphy, eco key rings, balloon art, and more, making it a hands-on festival for the whole family.
However, the experience booths close at 4 PM, so arriving early is recommended.
This year's festival features the 'Wild Flower Trail Picking Challenge,' promoting environmental protection. Visitors can collect trash along the flower path and exchange it for local gift certificates or flower pots.
The festival also includes a photo contest with prizes, encouraging visitors to capture memories at scenic spots.
The food offerings have also diversified, with food trucks and snack booths added to traditional local restaurants, featuring dishes like ginseng fries and seasonal wild vegetable bibimbap at reasonable prices.
Notably, visitors can taste local delicacies like young leatherwood shoots, a rare treat found only here.
This year, there are more seating areas for dining, allowing visitors to enjoy their meals while taking in the natural surroundings.
The newly created deck paths enhance accessibility, allowing families with strollers and seniors to enjoy the beauty of the forest comfortably.
The festival is a celebration of pure natural scenery, free from artificial structures, with abundant free experience programs and improved viewing paths, making it a delightful destination.
Instead of lamenting the falling cherry blossoms, why not embark on a journey to Geumsan to seek out the softly blooming wild cherry blossoms? Your spring days will be enriched by the gentle fragrance carried by the spring breeze.
