Shinan County's Response to Climate Change in Aquaculture

Hello from Shinan County!
We are excited to announce that Shinan County has been selected for the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries' pilot aquaculture support project to address climate change.
This initiative will invest a total of 300 million KRW to reduce aquaculture damage caused by high temperatures and other climate change effects, while also increasing income for fish farmers.
Why is change necessary now?
Currently, our offshore cage farming primarily focuses on black rockfish, which is vulnerable to high temperatures, especially as it has a temperature threshold of around 28°C.
The repeated occurrences of high temperatures in recent years have put our fish farmers at risk of ongoing losses.
Therefore, Shinan County is taking action.
To address these challenges, we are launching a pilot aquaculture program to transition to species that are more resilient to high temperatures.
We will introduce various species such as:
✔️ Sea bass
✔️ Black sea bream
✔️ Flatfish
This shift will move us away from a single-species focus to a more diverse aquaculture system.
A more stable aquaculture and a sustainable future are our goals.
Through this project, Shinan County aims to:
✨ Minimize damage from high temperatures
✨ Ensure stability in aquaculture management
✨ Build a sustainable aquaculture industry
✨ Create new sources of income
Additionally, we will establish successful pilot cases to spread new models that respond to climate change.
The time has come to reduce past damages.
Since 2021, we have provided approximately 14.1 billion KRW in disaster relief funds to 470 fish farms affected by high temperatures.
Now is the time for fundamental responses and changes.
With this project, we will improve the structure of the aquaculture industry and create a sustainable environment resilient to climate change.
Together with our fish farmers, we will build a more stable and future-oriented fishery industry.
