Exploring Cheonghwa House: A Must-Visit for Sundae Lovers in Cheonan

Every time I visit Cheonan, I always seek out Cheonghwa House for its delicious sundae.
This local dish is loved for its generous portions, clean taste without any off-flavors, and a clear broth.
During my recent city tour of Cheonan, I finally had the chance to visit Cheonghwa House, which is often known for its long waiting line. After about a 30-minute wait, I was able to enter.
Established in 1968, Cheonghwa House is the original sundae restaurant that has been passed down through four generations. It has been recognized as a 'Centennial Store' by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, and has also received accolades as a representative restaurant of Chungcheongnam-do.
The restaurant is well-known nationwide thanks to various media features and celebrity visits. Visiting in person, I understood why it attracts so many customers.
Now, let me share my detailed experience at Cheonghwa House.
As I approached the entrance, the striking exterior was visible from afar, and the line of customers waiting confirmed its popularity.
Cheonghwa House is located at 1749 Chungjeol-ro, Byeongcheon-myeon, Dongnam-gu, Cheonan, Chungcheongnam-do.
I visited around noon, and there were already many people in line. After waiting for about 30 minutes, I was able to enter without a number system; customers simply line up in order.
It's advisable to expect some waiting time during lunch hours.
Inside, there were certificates designating the restaurant as a Cheonan delicacy and a traditional establishment. I also spotted a signature from a famous chef, confirming its reputation.
The dining area features tables accommodating from one to twelve people, and there are separate spaces for dining with shoes on and off.
When I ordered the sundae soup, the basic side dishes were served, including shrimp, salt, spicy sauce, and neatly cut kimchi. I ordered one serving of sundae soup, which included a bowl of rice for 9,000 won.
The sundae soup has a clear broth style and is impressive with its clean taste, free from any off-flavors. The sundae was generously portioned, providing a satisfying chew, and the meat and innards made the dish hearty.
Adding sesame powder and spicy sauce enhanced the broth's richness, offering a different appeal. Unlike typical sundae soup places that serve mostly small leftovers, Cheonghwa House offers substantial pieces of meat and sundae, ensuring a fulfilling experience.
The portion was so generous that even after mixing in rice, the broth did not overflow. Adding radish kimchi and cabbage kimchi provided a crunchy texture, making it enjoyable until the last bite.
Overall, the meal was satisfying without being overly flashy, making Cheonghwa House a great spot for a comforting meal in Byeongcheon Sundae Street. I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a hearty meal during their visit to Cheonan.
