Finding Peace at Cheonggoksa Temple Amidst Autumn Flowers
How about taking a moment to enjoy a cup of tea in the serene mountains, away from the busy daily routine? Cheonggoksa Temple, located at the foot of Mount Wora in Geumsan-myeon, Jinju, Gyeongsangnam-do, is a traditional temple with over a thousand years of history. It offers a space to appreciate Buddhist cultural heritage amidst beautiful nature, where anyone can relax and savor a cup of tea. I found a moment of peace in the autumn flowers blooming at Cheonggoksa.
The first thing that catches the eye within the temple grounds is the Bell Pavilion, showcasing beautiful traditional architecture. The gently curved tiled roof and the colorful dancheong (traditional decorative painting) harmoniously display the dignity of this ancient temple. The pavilion is adorned with vibrant lanterns, and lush trees surround the temple, creating a cozy atmosphere.
Cheonggoksa is said to have been founded in 879 AD by the monk Doseon during the reign of King Heongang of Silla. The story goes that Doseon saw a blue crane descend into the valley of Mount Wora and believed it to be a sacred place, leading him to establish the temple. Through many renovations over the years, its history continues to this day.
Inside the Bell Pavilion, a large drum and a uniquely sculpted animal figure can be found. The sculpture, adorned with a vivid blue body and intricate patterns, offers a different visual treat from the typical temple scenery.
In Buddhism, the sound of the drum symbolizes the spreading of Buddha's teachings. The round drum and its colorful decorations allow for a close-up view of the beauty of traditional Buddhist culture. The wish lanterns hanging behind seem to carry the heartfelt wishes of many people. At Cheonggoksa, there is joy in slowly appreciating even the small decorations throughout the temple.
Upon arriving at the main hall, the Daeungjeon, visitors are greeted by blooming chrysanthemums. Yellow, pink, and red pots of chrysanthemums line the stairs, resembling a small autumn garden.
The Daeungjeon is the representative building of Cheonggoksa and is designated as a cultural heritage of Gyeongsangnam-do. The signboard hanging on the front, the intricate dancheong, and the beautiful tiled roof tell stories of its long history.
Especially in autumn, the blend of traditional architecture with colorful chrysanthemums creates a unique landscape. The majestic yet warm atmosphere in front of the Daeungjeon makes it a great spot for capturing the essence of autumn at Cheonggoksa.
As you gaze at the open doors of the Daeungjeon, you can see the Buddha statue inside. The softly illuminated statue and the carefully tended chrysanthemum bonsai in front create a natural harmony.
Small pots of chrysanthemums placed on the stone steps showcase various shapes and colors. The yellow blossoms, white petals, and small red fruits add vibrancy to the tranquil temple atmosphere.
Cheonggoksa is not just a place to admire ancient architecture; it is a space where nature, culture, and inner peace can be felt together. Pausing for a moment in front of the main hall and looking around seems to slow down the pace of busy life.
As you walk through the temple grounds, you may come across a simple wooden chair in front of the tiled wall. Though rough, its natural wood grain harmonizes with the traditional tiles, creating a warm ambiance. Behind the chair, old tiles are neatly arranged, and beyond them lies a forest beginning to take on autumn hues. Even without special decorations, it presents a beautiful landscape.
Taking a moment to sit and look around, you will find that it is not grand spectacles that catch your eye, but the simple beauty of nature. While traveling quickly to many places is enjoyable, spending time in one place and slowly appreciating the surroundings creates special memories.
