Exploring Yonghyeon Natural Recreation Forest in Seosan

Summer brings the season of vacations, where one can seek clear valleys and lush forests.
On hot days, natural recreation forests with cool nature serve as the best getaway.
In Chungnam, there are a total of 16 natural recreation forests located in Seosan, Asan, Cheonan, Yesan, Hongseong, Gongju, Cheongyang, Boryeong, Seocheon, Nonsan, and Geumsan.
Among them, we visited Yonghyeon Natural Recreation Forest in Seosan.
Yonghyeon Natural Recreation Forest is located in the northern ridge of Mount Gayasan, the highest peak in Seosan, at an elevation of 678 meters.
The Yonghyeon Valley flows 5 kilometers north from Mount Gayasan.
The beautiful scenery of the valley and mountains is quite popular, especially in summer when many people come to enjoy the valley.
However, it remains uncertain whether water activities will be possible this summer due to ongoing flood recovery efforts. During our visit on June 21, while we could enjoy the view, swimming was not permitted.
The accommodation facilities at Yonghyeon Natural Recreation Forest include camping sites, forest houses, and a forest culture recreation center.
The room rates for accommodations vary from 76,000 won to 208,000 won for 3 to 10-person rooms during peak weekends.
Camping fees during peak weekends are 16,500 won, with daily entrance fees set at 1,000 won for adults, 600 won for teenagers, and 300 won for children.
Parking fees are 1,500 won for compact cars, 3,000 won for medium and small cars, and 5,000 won for large vehicles.
From July 15 to August 24, 2026, the summer peak season will operate on a lottery basis for reservations.
Although advance reservations were closed from June 9 to 16, the results were announced on June 18, and unallocated rooms will open on a first-come, first-served basis on June 25 at 1 PM.
Daily entry is available from 9 AM to 6 PM, allowing visitors to enjoy the natural recreation forest separately from accommodation bookings.
On the way back from Yonghyeon Natural Recreation Forest, visitors can also encounter two national treasures of Seosan: the Seosan Maae Amita Buddha and Boweonsa Temple Site.
The Seosan Maae Buddha is famous for its smile from the Baekje period, while the Boweonsa Temple Site has been a historical site since the Baekje to Joseon periods. The Seosan Maae Buddha was designated as a national treasure in 1962, and last year, the five-story stone pagoda at Boweonsa was upgraded to national treasure status.
A summer trip to Chungnam's Yonghyeon Natural Recreation Forest offers a refreshing experience with valleys and forests, along with the opportunity to see two national treasures along the way.
