As the intense summer heat begins, the exploration of the mystical underground world found only in Jeju is gaining attention, instead of the usual journey to the cool sea. The massive lava tube, which had been closed for a long time due to rockfall issues, has finally reopened to travelers after extensive maintenance.

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the cave's discovery, making it particularly meaningful. Thanks to its unique coolness that perfectly blocks the midday heat, families visiting with parents and couples seeking unique dates are flocking to this site.

The previously restricted area has undergone a comprehensive renovation project with a budget of 12.1 billion won, creating a completely new viewing environment. All outdated wooden walkways have been removed and replaced with sturdy stainless steel decks, significantly enhancing walking stability.

Additionally, in areas with potential rockfall hazards, dense safety barriers have been reinforced to ensure visitors can safely admire the magnificent interior. The internal lighting has also been upgraded to eco-friendly LED lights, reducing brightness while preserving the cave's unique dark atmosphere and eliminating green contamination caused by moss growth.

With its world-class lava columns and geological wonders stretching for 1 km, the approximately 1 km section open to the public is a geological treasure trove. As a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site and a Global Geopark, the walls and floors showcase traces left by hot lava flowing thousands of years ago.

The highlight of this course is undoubtedly the towering 7.6-meter-high lava column located deep within the cave. This massive column, rare on a global scale, dazzles with its stunning lighting and has become a popular photo spot where visitors line up for memorable shots.

The entrance fee is a mere 4,000 won for adults, with discounts for youth and children, making it an incredibly affordable way to experience a world-class natural heritage site.

Ticket sales are available from 9 AM to 5 PM, with the entire tour closing at 6 PM, so plan accordingly. Typically, exploring the cave takes about 40 minutes to an hour, and for a more in-depth experience, consider joining a guided tour led by a professional interpreter.

Due to the cave's consistently cool temperatures, it's essential to wear a light jacket and comfortable shoes. Instead of sandals or flip-flops, wear sturdy sneakers or hiking shoes to avoid slipping on the rough and damp floors.

If you plan your schedule around this site, consider visiting nearby cafes or seafood restaurants in Gujwa-eup after your cave exploration. Unlike outdoor tourist spots that require prolonged walking, this indoor attraction is a perfect alternative, allowing you to enjoy a unique atmosphere without being affected by the weather.
