Which is more beautiful, the lotus flowers of Hapdeokje or Goljeongji?

Hapdeokje and Goljeongji are representative lotus flower attractions in Dangjin, each possessing contrasting charms with overwhelming scale and the beauty of individual flowers, allowing for a choice that suits personal taste.

If you want to appreciate the most beautifully blooming lotus flowers under the scorching July sun, Dangjin is the best choice.

Many people ponder whether they prefer the vast scenery of ponds or the large and vibrant individual flowers. In this post, we will thoroughly compare the two locations, Hapdeokje and Goljeongji, which coexist with historical value and natural beauty, to help you with your travel decisions.

Hapdeokje is perfect if you want to capture life photos against the backdrop of a vast sea of lotus flowers. The Hapdeokje waterfront park spans about 250,000 square meters, with a total length of 1,771 meters and a circumference of 8-9 kilometers, showcasing one of the largest irrigation facilities from the Joseon Dynasty. The walking paths are well-developed among the endless lotus leaves, making it an ideal place to leisurely stroll and enjoy the summer atmosphere.

However, due to its vastness, there is a bit of a shortage of shade, so hats and parasols are essential. Being one of the top three lotus flower attractions in Chungnam, it is highly recommended for those who want to enjoy a walk with family or a partner against an open scenic backdrop. There are also many photo zones scattered throughout, with popular spots including heart photo zones and bicycle photo zones near the central tunnel where the trumpet vine flowers bloom.

The 9th Dangjin Hapdeokje Lotus Festival is currently underway, and I have visited twice during the day and night. On the second day of the festival, colorful flower dropping games and fireworks performances attracted numerous visitors who enjoyed their time. The festival, running until July 5, also features astronomical experiences where children can meet stars and the sun, making it both enjoyable and educational. Various experiences, exhibitions, and food trucks are adding to the festival's joy.

The night view of the rural theme park below the Hapdeok Water Folk Museum is beautiful, and I enjoyed the festival while watching the watermill turn. Currently, about 50% of the lotus flowers are blooming, with red and white lotus flowers in bloom. They are expected to become even more beautiful as we move from early to mid-July.

If you value the vibrant beauty of each flower and a tranquil atmosphere over scale, head straight to Goljeongji! Located in Myeoncheon-myeon, Goljeongji was constructed during the Joseon Dynasty by the practical scholar Park Ji-won, who served as the governor of Myeoncheon, holding deep historical significance. Although it is smaller than Hapdeokje, the blooming lotus flowers are charming and beautiful, making Goljeongji feel much more attractive to me. The small-scale pond is surrounded by cherry blossom trees that create shade, and the cool breeze is refreshing.

There are many resting spots and pavilions throughout. The scenery harmonized with the pavilion in the middle of the pond, Geongonilchojeong, gives the feeling of viewing an oriental painting, making it popular among photographers. The walking path features exercise equipment and swings, and I took a moment to sit and enjoy the cool breeze while listening to the sounds of birds, truly healing and relaxing.

The current bloom status of the lotus flowers in Goljeongji is about 20%, with flowers blooming mainly along the edges. It is expected that the lotus flowers will become even more beautiful next week as they reach full bloom.

For those hesitant to choose just one of the two attractions, I suggest an efficient route. Since Hapdeokje and Goljeongji are close to each other, it's possible to visit both in one day. Enjoy the beauty of Gunja-jeong lotus flowers, just 2-3 minutes away from Goljeongji. Heal from the summer heat at Dangjin's Hapdeokje and Goljeongji, and don't forget to try the delicious kongguksu around Myeoncheon-eupseong (there are many great restaurants).
