Exploring the Korean Confucian Culture Promotion Institute
The Korean Confucian Culture Promotion Institute (HanYujin) is a specialized institution located in Nonsan, Chungcheongnam-do, dedicated to the promotion of Confucian culture. It aims to modernize and develop the spirit and values of Confucianism while collecting, preserving, and researching national academic materials to widely disseminate traditional culture.
The institute operates various cultural content, including special exhibitions, academic conferences, and educational programs, leading the way in popularizing and globalizing Confucian culture.
As one of the eleven scenic spots in Nonsan, the Korean Confucian Culture Promotion Institute serves as a hub for Confucian cultural tourism, connecting with sites such as Jonghakdang, Myeongjae House, Nokgang Seowon, and Donam Seowon. It is open from 10 AM to 5 PM, closed on Mondays and on January 1st, Lunar New Year, and Chuseok.
Upon entering the institute, visitors will find the café 'Sarang' (meaning 'love'), which embodies the dual meanings of traditional love and the architectural style of a sarangchae. After touring the exhibitions, guests can enjoy leisurely conversations at the café.
The special exhibition on the second floor, titled 'Yangmu Gongsin Lee Sam – Loyalty Piercing Through the Years,' has been extended until June 14, 2026. This exhibition highlights the life and loyalty of General Lee Sam (1677-1735), one of the last loyal subjects of the Joseon Dynasty.
The exhibition is divided into four sections. The first part examines the status of Lee Sam as a loyal subject through the honorary title 'Baekil' bestowed by King Yeongjo, alongside related artifacts. The second part reflects on the loyalty of the warrior through various portraits and documents. The third part emphasizes the trust between King Yeongjo and Lee Sam amidst political strife, while the fourth part showcases Lee Sam's character and dignity through his writings.
The staircase leading to the first floor features a unique design, resembling a bookshelf. This space, displaying books under the concept of 'New Book Rack,' allows visitors to experience a modern reinterpretation of traditional book racks from the Joseon era. It symbolizes the connection between knowledge, people, tradition, and modernity, embodying the identity of the institute.
The upcoming exhibition in 2026, 'The Connector: Expanding Perspectives,' will reinterpret the open natural philosophy of Joseon scholars through a contemporary lens, addressing today's environmental and ethical challenges with Confucian values.
As visitors leave the exhibition, they are often left with the profound thoughts of viewing the world with a broad perspective and recognizing the interconnectedness of all life.
After visiting the Korean Confucian Culture Promotion Institute, it is recommended to head to Jonghakdang, a historic educational space where children from the Papyung Yoon clan studied during the Joseon Dynasty, to further reflect on the teachings encountered in the exhibition.
