As you leisurely stroll through the Hapdeok Catholic Shrine,

you will encounter a magnificent orange-brick building standing gracefully beneath the blue sky.

Located in Hapdeok-eup, Dangjin-si, Chungcheongnam-do, Hapdeok Church

offers a glimpse into the history and essence of the city of Dangjin, beyond its religious significance.

Today, we would like to introduce the beautiful architectural value of Hapdeok Church,

along with the deep historical background intertwined with Dangjin and Catholicism.

Dangjin has historically been a vital gateway to the inland through Asan Bay and Sapgyocheon,

being close to the sea. The Hapdeok area, with its developed plains,

was renowned as a granary and a crucial transportation hub for waterways.

These geographical features became a major conduit for Western thoughts and Catholic faith entering Joseon in the late 18th century.

Priests and scholars who arrived by boat spread their faith through Dangjin into the interior of Chungcheong-do.

This is why Dangjin and the Naepo region are referred to as the 'cradle of Korean Catholicism.'

Even during times of persecution, many believers preserved their faith in this land,

with Hapdeok playing a central role in the faith community.

The predecessor of Hapdeok Church, Yangchon Church, was established by Father Richard in 1890.

In 1899, it was relocated to its current site and renamed Hapdeok Church,

solidifying its position as the hub for the spread of Catholicism in the Naepo region.

The area surrounding Hapdeok Church features many leisurely spaces perfect for picnics.

The church's structure, which feels emblematic of Catholicism,

impresses from every angle with its grandeur.

Although part of the church was damaged during the Korean War,

it underwent restoration in the 1960s and has maintained its historic charm,

now designated as a cultural property of Chungcheongnam-do.

Architecturally, Hapdeok Church features an exotic and mystical facade based on Gothic style.

The harmonious use of red and gray bricks adds a sense of grandeur to the walls.

Curious about the interior, I felt as if stepping into a time machine,

transporting me back hundreds of years.

During my visit, I was fortunate that the church's interior door was open,

allowing me to explore the inside with a quiet heart.

The moment I stepped inside, the noise from outside disappeared,

and I felt a cozy and serene atmosphere.

The interior features high arched ceilings and wooden pillars,

blending Western classicism with the warmth of ancient times.

Colorful light fragments streaming through the stained-glass windows

gently spilled onto the church floor and chairs.

Depending on the angle of the sunlight, the colors and atmosphere inside the church

changed slightly, creating a breathtaking illusion of time standing still.

If you're planning a weekend trip to Dangjin,

I highly recommend visiting Hapdeok Church for a delightful experience.
