Exploring the Hidden Gems of Jusaeng-myeon, Geochang

Hello!
Today, I would like to share my journey through history and nature in Jusaeng-myeon, a hidden gem in Geochang-gun, Gyeongnam. While many might first think of Susungdae or the Gamaksan Astha Chrysanthemum Festival when they hear Geochang, Jusaeng-myeon is home to special places where tranquility and the stories of our ancestors come alive.
These include 'Yeongguidae,' a resting place for scholars, and the 'Old Exam Road' that scholars traveled to reach Hanyang for their exams. Let’s embark on a healing road through the beautiful mountains and clear waters of Jusaeng-myeon!
Yeongguidae Park

1. The Elegance of Scholars at 'Yeongguidae'
As soon as you enter, your gaze is drawn to a massive natural stone engraved with the characters 'Yeongguidae.' The name means 'to return while reciting poetry.' It is said that during the Joseon Dynasty, scholars were captivated by the beautiful scenery here, composing poetry and enjoying scholarly discussions. The surrounding mountains and lush fields evoke the leisure that those scholars once experienced.
After taking a commemorative photo in front of the Yeongguidae rock, we began our exploration.
2. Thoughtful Amenities for Visitors at Jusaeng-myeon Park
Surrounding Yeongguidae is a well-maintained small park, perfect for resting. There are washbasins available (not for drinking!) for visitors to use before and after their explorations, making it very convenient.
We carefully read the informative signs about using the park safely and comfortably, noting the basic etiquette such as no littering and keeping pets on leashes. This space reflects the meticulous management of the Jusaeng-myeon office.
3. A Resting Place Harmonized with Nature: Yeongguijeong
Crossing the river, you will find an elegant pavilion set against stunning natural scenery. This is 'Yeongguijeong.'
Sitting in the pavilion, I was surrounded by a clear stream in front and green mountains behind, creating a breathtaking view. Listening to the sounds of the wind and water while closing my eyes, the stress of urban life seemed to vanish instantly. The poems displayed inside the pavilion allowed me to feel a glimpse of the scholars' refined lifestyle.
4. The Exciting Start of the 'Old Exam Road'
We arrived at Jusaeng-myeon, where our second destination, the 'Old Exam Road,' is located. This path was significant for scholars from Geochang and nearby areas during the Joseon Dynasty as they traveled to Hanyang for their exams. You can almost feel the excitement and tension of the scholars who once walked this road, dreaming of passing with top honors.
5. Murals Depicting the Stories of the Old Exam Road
Entering the alleys around the Old Exam Road, you encounter an interesting landscape where the past and present coexist. Charming murals brighten the walls of warehouses, capturing the eye.
Along the serene stone-walled path adorned with blooming plum trees and jars, scholars in traditional hats are seen taking their first steps toward Hanyang, accompanied by a dog. A family carefully crosses a stepping stone bridge, carrying their belongings, reflecting the vibrant life of the common people who once walked this road.
6. Honoring Dr. Lee Joo-hwan of Geochang
The final stop on our journey in Jusaeng-myeon is the 'Anti-Japanese Memorial Stone and Statue of Dr. Lee Joo-hwan.' He was a notable independence activist from Jusaeng-myeon who dedicated his life to the anti-Japanese struggle following the Eulsa Treaty.
Standing before the statue of the doctor, gazing solemnly ahead, I felt a deep sense of respect.
My journey in Jusaeng-myeon concluded meaningfully, honoring the noble sacrifice and patriotic spirit engraved in the memorial stone.
Yeongguidae and the Old Exam Road in Jusaeng-myeon are not just places of beautiful scenery but also special destinations where one can feel the culture of the Joseon scholars and the spirit of national heroes.
If you wish to escape the complexities of daily life and feel the breath of history amidst nature, why not embark on a time travel to Geochang's Jusaeng-myeon?
