The GaeSan GamMul Potato Festival was held from June 12 to 14 at the Rural Center in GamMul-myeon, GaeSan County. This year marked the 15th edition of the festival celebrating GaeSan's special premium potatoes.
Visitors had the opportunity to experience potato digging, purchase potatoes, and enjoy tasting potato dishes.
GaeSan is known for its clean air, pure water, and favorable soil and climate conditions for agriculture. GaeSan University sweet corn and clean GaeSan peppers are famous nationwide. Another notable crop is the GamMul potato, which thrives in the region's continental climate with significant temperature variations and abundant sunlight.
GamMul-myeon boasts well-drained sandy loam, making it ideal for potato cultivation. The GamMul potato is characterized by its fluffy texture and subtle sweetness, cultivated by around 250 farms across approximately 60-70 hectares.
Arriving at the festival venue, visitors pass through neatly maintained fields alongside growing crops. This year's festival theme was "Falling in Love with Potatoes and the GamMul Spirit." The outdoor stage at the Rural Center served as the main venue, surrounded by experience booths and a potato marketplace.
Events included a surprise potato auction and busking performances. A singing contest was also held, culminating in an encore performance showcasing impressive vocal talent.
A small exhibition of poems and drawings by elementary school students about GamMul potatoes added a creative touch to the festival. The community had prepared a spacious plaza with sunshades, allowing both residents and visitors to enjoy the festivities comfortably.
Various local products, including traditional clothing and processed foods like onions, mushrooms, and omija extract, were sold. Hands-on experiences, such as making shiitake mushroom pizza and decorating potato characters, were popular attractions.
During the festival, a stamp tour encouraged participation in activities, with rewards for completing specific tasks. However, due to high demand, some experiences were already full by the afternoon.
The flowerbed at the Rural Center featured blooming potatoes, and by harvest time, they had grown significantly. The festival's main highlight was the potato marketplace, where tents were set up for each farm, selling various potato varieties at fixed prices.
GamMul potatoes are known for their excellent quality and flavor. Visitors were encouraged to check out GaeSan GamMul potatoes when purchasing. The festival offered a unique experience, showcasing the region's agricultural richness.
