Exploring the Exciting World of Mathematics at Geochang Math Experience Center

Hello, this is reporter Kim Min-hye.
In Geochang County, there is the largest math experience center in Gyeongnam. Every Saturday, there are math experiences and software programs for families.
The Geochang Math Experience Center is a space that connects points of infinite mathematical imagination with lines.
Here are the experience programs for August. Weekend experiences can accommodate up to four teams per session.
The center operates on weekdays from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM, and it is closed on Mondays. On Saturdays, it operates from 9:30 AM to 12:00 PM. For elementary school students in the 3rd grade and below, parental accompaniment is required.
You can park on the first floor and move to the Riemann Hall through the Hojimath Experience Center.
The Hojimath Experience Center is equipped with various math tools.
This is a magical space where math becomes fun, fostering the power of imagination and discovery through mathematical curiosity.
Our goal is to create a culture of mathematics that discovers meaning through a process of constant questioning.
This weekend, families participated in a math experience making cube art. Did you know that the history of the cube is not very long? It began to gain popularity when Hungarian architect and inventor Erno Rubik created the 3x3 cube, leading to competitions.
Initially, cubes seemed difficult, but after listening to the instructor's explanation and trying to solve them one by one, I realized that understanding the principles allows you to solve the cube.
We made cube art with four 3x3 cubes, aligning one side. The instructor kindly provided blueprints to follow, making it easy to complete.
After creating flowers and puppies, I understood the concept easily. The Math Experience Center is connected to Geochang Elementary School, allowing students to enjoy math during after-school classes and math lessons.
After the cube art, we had fun playing the Cubits board game in the Euler board game room. Cubits is suitable for ages 8 and up and is a puzzle board game where you quickly match the presented patterns using cubes of various colors and shapes. Although it looks simple, it requires focus and quick thinking!
It's a great game for both children and adults, making it perfect for family game time.
During the vacation period, utilizing the board game room to explore various board games can lead to a fulfilling break.
We completed the cube art! The theme for this week's collaborative Rubik's Cube art is character impulse. It's a space where anyone can challenge themselves to complete a picture using a collection of 3x3 cubes.
Finally, we experienced the math tools in the Hojimath Experience Center. The most fascinating was the monster leg model, created by Theo Jansen, known as the Strandbeest (beach beast). This structure is not just a sculpture; it uses the power of the wind to walk along the beach like a living creature, making it kinetic art.
The secret to this monster leg lifting its legs like a person and walking on flat surfaces lies in a mathematical mechanism called Jansen's Linkage. Eleven rods (links) form one unit of the leg. When connected at the right ratios, the leg's endpoint (foot) moves horizontally when touching the ground and follows a curved trajectory when in the air.
Usually, wheels must always touch the ground, but this link structure creates a cyclical motion similar to walking by calculating the lengths of the eleven rods using only a compass and ruler.
Triangles and squares overlap to appear more three-dimensional. Which is stronger, the triangle or the square? Check the video below!
The experience concludes with a satisfaction survey. The Geochang Math Experience Center allows you to directly experience and feel mathematics! Enjoy your vacation with the math experience center—you won’t regret it!
During the vacation, if you visit for half-price travel, please note that it operates only on Saturdays, so make sure to check the time before visiting.
