When you want to escape the suffocating city and enjoy a refreshing break amidst deep greenery and the sound of clear water, Hwayanggukok in Goesan, Chungcheongbuk-do, offers a mesmerizing valley that captivates both the eyes and ears. This special place is officially recognized among numerous domestic valleys for its unique value.
The majestic granite rocks and crystal-clear waters create a breathtaking atmosphere throughout your walk. Although there are no extravagant artificial facilities, the unique terrain shaped by time makes it an excellent choice for couples enjoying a weekend drive or families planning a leisurely outing.
Hwayanggukok, located in Cheongcheon-myeon, Goesan-gun, is a hidden gem within the stunning natural beauty of Sobaeksan National Park. This area, rich in the cultural heritage of Confucian scholars from the Joseon Dynasty, features nine distinct spots along a 3 km stretch, each with its own charm.
The enormous rocks formed by long-term erosion and the pristine granite landscape offer an overwhelming view rarely seen in typical mountain valleys. Especially in June, as the surrounding trees grow denser, the branches create natural shade, making it the perfect environment for a pleasant walk away from the hot sun.
The core joy of this place lies in discovering the hidden stories behind the nine scenic spots encountered along the trail. Starting with the towering Gyeongcheon Rock, the clear clouds reflecting like a mirror on Unyeongdam serve as a popular photo spot for visitors.
Sitting on the rocks and tracing the footprints of ancient Confucian scholars or capturing life-like photos in front of the shimmering sand at Geumsadam creates a timeless experience. Upon reaching the last spot, Pachun, you can dip your feet in the wide expanse of white rocks for a private moment of relaxation.
There is no entrance fee to this natural garden, allowing anyone to visit freely year-round. Even a leisurely round trip takes about two hours, making it manageable for families with children or elderly parents.
However, when visiting by car, remember that parking fees vary by vehicle type. Small cars are charged 2,000 won, while medium and large vehicles are around 5,000 won. The valley entrance is designated as one-way, so you must follow the route from the first to the ninth spot to avoid congestion.
If you want a more diverse outdoor experience, consider combining your trek at Hwayanggukok with a climb up Mount Domyeong, which stands at 643 meters. Including historical sites like Hwayang Seowon and Mandongmyo in your itinerary can also provide a rich educational experience.
