In Hapdeok-eup, Dangjin-si, Chungcheongnam-do, lies the Hapdeok Reservoir, which has provided agricultural water for a long time.

This site is significant not only for its historical value but also as an ecological environment where various species thrive.

The Hapdeok Ecological Tourism Experience Center was established to help children learn about the history and nature of Hapdeokje in a fun and engaging way.

Designated as Chungcheongnam-do Cultural Heritage No. 70 in 1989, Hapdeokje was listed as a World Irrigation Heritage Site by the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage in 2017.

The center features exhibitions that explore the long history of the reservoir and offer immersive experiences that highlight its ecological environment.

The center operates from 10 AM to 5:30 PM, with last entry at 5 PM. It is closed for lunch from 12 PM to 1 PM and does not operate on Mondays or during major holidays like Seollal and Chuseok. Admission is free.

Visitors should note that the center requires shoes to be removed inside.

Although the exhibition space is relatively small, it effectively combines historical and ecological content, making it suitable for families with children.

Upon entering, visitors can see a mounted whooper swan, a bird designated as a natural monument. Hapdeokje is home to various rare species, including the whooper swan, the Korean brown frog, and the golden frog, underscoring its ecological importance.

The exhibition also showcases the formation and transformation of Hapdeokje, which is known to be one of the three major reservoirs from the Joseon Dynasty, with its construction dating back to before the Goryeo Dynasty.

There are stories that it was built by Gyeon Hwon of the Later Baekje for battles against Goryeo, confirming its long history as a water management facility.

If visiting with children, the immersive video experience room is a must-see. The center recreates the natural environment of Hapdeokje through video, allowing visitors to experience the flora and fauna that are difficult to observe directly.

In the immersive video experience room, children can color various plants and animals that inhabit Hapdeokje. After scanning their drawings, the images come to life on the screen.

Animals and plants move within the video, and they react when visitors touch the screen or move their bodies, creating an engaging and interactive experience.

Another fun activity is a race against animals living in Hapdeokje. After taking a photo with a camera on the wall, visitors can select their favorite character, and an avatar reflecting their appearance is created.

During the game, players can roll on a platform in front of the screen to move their avatar, jumping to collect items along the way. This activity can accommodate up to four participants, making it great for family visits.

After the experience, visitors can leave feedback on a memo wall filled with notes from previous guests, showcasing the joy many children have had during their visit.

Nearby the Hapdeok Ecological Tourism Experience Center, there are additional attractions worth exploring. A rural theme park is adjacent to the center, and the Hapdeok Agricultural Folklore Museum and Hapdeok Cathedral are also within close proximity.

Instead of just visiting the center, combining it with nearby facilities allows for a comprehensive exploration of the history, rural culture, and ecological environment of the Hapdeok area. This makes it an ideal summer vacation outing for families, where they can enjoy exhibitions and activities while learning about the history and nature of Hapdeokje.
