Exploring Seochulji: A Hidden Gem in Gyeongju
Seochulji, located at the foot of Dongnam Mountain in Gyeongju, is a popular healing spot during the summer, attracting many travelers. Visitors can enjoy the area without worrying about entrance fees or ticketing procedures, making it an ideal destination for a relaxing stroll.
From mid-July to mid-August, the red flowers of the crape myrtle bloom along the pond, creating a stunning landscape. The surrounding trekking trails and historical background make it suitable for a leisurely half-day visit.
The main attraction of Seochulji is the Joseon-era pavilion, Iyojeong, which was built in 1664. This pavilion, with its four front and two side rooms, beautifully complements the pond, showcasing the elegance of ancient architecture.
The vibrant red flowers of the crape myrtle hanging over the tiled roof capture the attention of both photographers and travelers. Visiting in the early morning when the sunlight is soft allows for capturing cleaner photographs amidst the tranquil pond scenery.

This legend has led to the tradition of offering sticky rice to crows during the full moon in January. Designated as a historic site in 1964, this area retains the essence of Silla within its 7,000 square meters.
Seochulji is open 24/7 for free, allowing visitors to come at any time without time restrictions. Those traveling by car can conveniently use the nearby Unification Hall parking lot for free, alleviating parking concerns.
However, if you plan to visit the Unification Hall, it’s advisable to check for closures on Mondays and holidays. The paths around the pond are well-maintained, making it easy to walk with seniors or young children.
