June in Jeju is a delightful season with dazzling sunshine and refreshing breezes, making it perfect for walking. Instead of a typical itinerary that involves driving to famous tourist spots, consider a unique 15.1 km walking journey starting from Shiheung Elementary School.
This popular trail allows you to discover the hidden gems of the eastern coast at no cost. However, since it takes over four hours to complete, careful planning and practical tips are essential to avoid exhaustion.
Starting before 9 AM is crucial for a leisurely 4.5-hour walk.
The journey begins in front of Shiheung Elementary School amidst a grassy field and charming rural scenery. As you enter the main section, lush green fields emerge between black stone walls, enhancing the walking experience. To avoid the scorching midday sun, it's advisable to start early in the morning.
If you set out late in the afternoon, you may struggle with physical fatigue as the sun sets, making it difficult to fully enjoy the surrounding scenery. Including time for photos and breaks, plan for a generous 4 to 5 hours for your itinerary.
At the summit of Al Oreum, 145 meters above sea level, enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of Seongsan Ilchulbong and Udo Island.
After walking along a flat path, you'll encounter the dirt trails of Malmi Oreum and Al Oreum surrounded by stone walls. After about 15 minutes of climbing, the view opens up to reveal Udo Island and the majestic Seongsan Ilchulbong.
Although Al Oreum is not very high, its unobstructed surroundings offer stunning 360-degree views. You may also encounter grazing horses and cattle, but be cautious of the droppings along the path.
If you're planning to visit with children, keep in mind that strollers cannot access the oreum sections. Due to the physical demands, it's wise to use baby carriers for young children or adjust your route to stick to flat areas.
Sunsets on the mountain come quickly, and without streetlights, it can be quite dangerous. Make sure to enter flat roads by 5 PM at the latest to ensure safety and prevent nighttime accidents.
Completing your trip with a walk along the Jongdal Coastal Road and connecting to Seopjikoji makes for a perfect day trip.
After descending from the oreum and passing Jongdal 1 Intersection, you'll enter a refreshing coastal road. Finishing your walk here and enjoying a warm meal at a nearby haenyeo house is a wonderful way to unwind.
If your energy allows, consider extending your route to Seongsan Gapmun and the back roads of Seopjikoji for a memorable healing outing in June, experiencing coastal views that you can't see from a car.
