On September 28, I visited Dongho Forest in Geochang, a great spot to enjoy the beautiful autumn scenery.
On September 1, the area was filled with blooming purple flowers, but by the end of the month, the landscape had transformed into a sea of red spider lilies.
The parking lot at Dongho Forest offers a shoe rack and water facilities, making it convenient for those who wish to walk barefoot.
There is also an electric insect repellent spray, which was quite handy during my visit.
The communal restrooms in the parking area were clean and well-maintained.
Dongho Forest, located in the traditional village of Dongho-ri, is gaining attention as one of Geochang's representative traditional forests, designated as a national forest cultural asset in 2025.
In autumn, the forest is famous for its red spider lilies blooming among the pine trees, creating a unique and picturesque fall landscape.
There are benches under the pine trees, perfect for resting, and the cool autumn weather made the experience even more enjoyable.
Dongho Forest is not just a lush woodland; it is a traditional village forest that has protected Dongho Village for many years.
Walking along the paths lined with pine and oak trees, you can feel the charm of the old village, especially with the vibrant red spider lilies adding to the beauty in autumn.
The forest is also used as an ecological learning space for students, and I encountered some students on a field trip during my visit.
As I walked up for about ten minutes while admiring the red spider lilies, I reached the entrance of Dongho Village, marked by stone lion statues on either side.
Dongho Village is home to the Yeonan Lee clan, where traditional culture is preserved, featuring historical buildings like the Geochang Dongho Lee House and Yeongeun House.
At the entrance of the village stands a zelkova tree, approximately 19 meters tall and around 523 years old, which is revered by the villagers.
Every year, a village rite is held at this tree, accompanied by a shrine nearby.
After a five-minute walk from the village entrance, you will find the Lee House, built during the late Joseon Dynasty.
The Geochang Dongho Lee House is a traditional southern-style house that reflects the practical living conditions of the time, featuring a layout with the main living area elevated and the guest quarters below.
It consists of various structures including the main gate, guest quarters, and storage, showcasing the lifestyle of a noble family from the late Joseon period.
Adjacent to the Lee House is Yeongeun House, which shares a wall with it; together, they represent the division of property within the same family.
The Lee House is the main residence, while Yeongeun House was built for Lee Hyun-seok, the second son of Lee Jin-ak, in 1884.
Nearby, a walnut tree adds to the charm of the visit.
I also spotted purple flowers of a plant called 'baechohyang' in a neighboring house, reminiscent of the spider lilies in Dongho Forest.
If you're looking for a great place to visit in Geochang or a beautiful forest path to walk in autumn, I highly recommend Dongho Forest, where the red spider lilies bloom.
Exploring the forest trail to Dongho Village and visiting the Geochang Dongho Lee House and Yeongeun House would make for a delightful autumn getaway.
