Geoje Maemi Fortress / Photo=Triple

If you want to escape the mundane daily life and enjoy an open sea and exotic scenery at the same time, there's a place you should pay attention to. Located in Geoje, Gyeongnam, Maemi Fortress captivates countless travelers with its unique atmosphere, reminiscent of a medieval castle from Europe.

This place harmonizes the sounds of the blue waves of the South Sea and the clear sounds of pebbles rolling, providing a deep resonance regardless of the season. Particularly, it is favored as the best day trip destination for couples and families, as visitors can stop by without any additional costs and capture unforgettable photos.

One of the biggest attractions of Maemi Fortress is that you can visit without worrying about expenses. Both the entrance fee and the large public parking lot near the top of the fortress are free, maximizing convenience for visitors.

Open 24/7 throughout the year, it is easy to visit comfortably in the early morning or late afternoon. It boasts excellent accessibility, being about 15 minutes from the Geoga Bridge and around 19 minutes from Gohyeon Bus Terminal.

Not many people know that this exotic and massive fortress was created solely by one person's hands without the aid of heavy machinery or construction companies. It all began in 2003 when Mr. Baek Soon-sam lost his farmland due to Typhoon Maemi and started stacking natural stones one by one to prevent future disasters.

Over 21 years, he personally mixed cement and yellow soil to build more than 20,000 stones. The fortress walls, about 9-10m high and 110m long, have evolved from a sturdy breakwater into a designated local attraction by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, visited by 580,000 people annually.

Upon entering the fortress, the intricately designed arched entrances and windows, along with unique stone stairs that seem to lead to the sky, catch the eye. The green moss growing between the stones adds a sense of time and creates a vintage atmosphere.

At the top of the fortress, visitors can enjoy the stunning view of the South Sea's horizon along with Geoga Bridge and Iseodo Island. The arched windows that frame the blue sea are particularly popular as a key photo zone.

Don't miss out on these top five must-see spots!
