If you are looking for pristine nature to wash away the fatigue of everyday life during the weekend, why not embark on a journey to a secret forest path that has been untouched by human hands for 30 years? Located at the foot of Daecheong Lake in Okcheon, Chungcheongbuk-do, this walking trail allows visitors to enjoy both the azure lake and lush primeval forest, making it a popular destination for weekend travelers.
Particularly appealing is the fact that there are no entrance or parking fees, and the entire trail is composed of gentle slopes, making it perfect for families with children or those accompanying elderly parents. The shaded trees provide a cool respite even in the summer, making it a well-known wellness route.
The Okcheon Hyangsuh Lake Trail has preserved its pristine ecosystem for over 30 years, as access was restricted following the completion of the Daecheong Dam. Designated as a national ecotourism area, it operates completely free of charge, eliminating any financial burden for visitors.
This area also integrates the poetic world of the genius poet Jeong Ji-yong, born in Okcheon, allowing walkers to encounter charming verses along the trail. The submerged paths of former residents occasionally reveal themselves during droughts, offering a unique time-traveling experience.
As you walk along the flat palm mat path, you will arrive at the highlight of this course, the Water Scales Observatory. This space, transformed from an old water intake facility into a scenic viewpoint without harming the environment, offers breathtaking views of the expansive Daecheong Lake once you cross the connected deck bridge.
The shimmering waves reflecting the sunlight and the silhouette of Hamwolsan Mountain create an unmissable photo opportunity. The treetop deck path, designed to overlook the lake from a height, and the stork-themed area provide ample space for contemplation and relaxation.
For a more enjoyable experience, it is recommended to visit after 3 PM to avoid the midday heat. Due to the area’s geographical orientation, the forest shade deepens in the late afternoon, allowing visitors to witness a stunning golden sunset that paints the lake red on the way back.
Additionally, the previous restrictions on large dog breeds have been completely lifted, making it a welcoming space for pet owners of all sizes. As long as basic etiquette such as leash wearing and carrying waste bags is observed, you can enjoy wellness trekking with your beloved pets.
Currently, safety maintenance work is underway to address rockfall hazards in some cliff areas of Daecheong Lake. As a result, only a 3.3 km section from Seonsa Park to the Water Scales Observatory and Stork area is open, with access strictly controlled beyond that point. Although completing the entire course is impossible, the round trip to the Stork area takes about two hours for adults, making it a perfect choice for a light weekend outing.
After your trek, you can head to the nearby Janggye Port and board the Jeong Ji-yong boat, which traverses Daecheong Lake, offering a comprehensive travel experience to enjoy the lake’s beauty from the water.
