Cultural Exhibition: 'That Alone is My World'
The Cheongju City Museum of Art is currently hosting a special exhibition titled That Alone is My World, featuring the work of artist C.Kim.
C.Kim is not only an artist but also a businessman and collector. His unique background has allowed him to carve out a distinct niche within contemporary art, engaging in various forms of creative work rather than specializing in a single field.
The exhibition title That Alone is My World serves as a declaration of trusting one's own senses and beliefs, as well as an expression of revealing oneself within the public discourse.
This exhibition provides an opportunity to explore the various layers surrounding C.Kim's work and reflects on the position he occupies as an artist.
The exhibition runs from March 20 (Friday) to June 27 (Sunday), 2026, and admission is priced at 1,000 KRW for adults, with a 50% discount for Cheongju citizens, making it an accessible experience.
In the lobby, visitors can see a sculpture made from fruits and grains, forming a human figure. Various grains like potatoes, apples, and grapes come together to create a lifelike face, showcasing C.Kim's use of everyday materials in his art.
Accompanying a large teddy bear is the phrase 'THAT ALONE IS MY WORLD,' which is a translation of the exhibition title. Inside, various artworks illuminated by lights are on display.
Additionally, the song 'That Alone is My World' by the band 'Wild Chrysanthemum' plays amidst the vibrant artworks, creating an immersive experience that feels like stepping into the artist's world.
Having closely experienced the contemporary art scene for many years, C.Kim has collected a wealth of visual experiences and insights that serve as the foundation for his creative endeavors. An abandoned refrigerator transforms into a person, while trees planted in an old, lifeless boat symbolize new life. Styrofoam washed ashore is reimagined into another artwork.
A large dog sculpture bears the phrase 'I AM HUNGRY. I WANNA EAT A DREAM,' reflecting C.Kim's belief that without dreams, one is as good as dead. He views the world through dreams, drawing inspiration that connects to his artistic practice.
As visitors ascend the stairs to the second floor, they encounter various figures representing mentally disturbed individuals. These works explore C.Kim's role as a doctor healing these individuals.
In addition to object-based works, a variety of paintings are on display, showcasing an impressive range of genres that make it hard to believe they all come from a single artist. Some may argue that C.Kim lacks a specific genre or identity, but he continues to create freely, utilizing all materials without bias.
One of his pieces, titled A Sad Tiger Toasting with Tomatoes, reflects how the artist saw himself in the tiger character from a book he stumbled upon, expressing childlike stories from an adult perspective.
In the hallway, visitors can browse through the artist's collection and watch an interview video. The artworks incorporate unique objects such as envelopes, keys, pills, and toothpaste, blending everyday items into the art.
Old barrels, scales, hats, glasses, and styrofoam have been reborn through C.Kim's unique perspective. For some, discarded objects become new artistic elements through C.Kim's work, showcasing his individual style beyond genre constraints.
The museum lobby features a café where visitors can take a break and purchase merchandise.
