A Quiet Space for Prayer: The Serene Bogwangsa Temple
As autumn deepens, I decided to escape the busy routine and enjoy the tranquility of nature by visiting Bogwangsa Temple located in Goesan, Chungbuk.
The visit to Bogwangsa, with its unique calmness and simplicity, was a perfect healing experience, contrasting the grandeur of famous temples.
To reach Bogwangsa, nestled deep in the mountains, one must ascend a winding road. Upon arrival, parking in a vacant area and facing the charming forest path instantly refreshes the mind.
As I walked along the path, colorful lanterns hung between the branches caught my eye. The yellow and pink lanterns contrasted beautifully with the deep green and autumn hues of the forest, marking my arrival at the temple.
The sound of crunching gravel underfoot added to the temple's serene atmosphere.
Continuing along the forest path, I spotted a sturdy stone base supporting the temple, with the main hall peeking out above it. A large old tree at the entrance featured a classic loudspeaker that once conveyed news from the village or temple.
On one side of the temple, a quaint collection of traditional jars stood together. These jars, huddled beside a modular container building, reflected the simple daily life of the temple, evoking a sense of comfort reminiscent of a grandmother's home.
As I reached the main hall, Daewungjeon, a clear and pure energy enveloped me. The hall, adorned with exquisite yet dignified colors, was framed by the vibrant autumn foliage, creating a picturesque scene reminiscent of an ink painting.
Scattered autumn leaves from a large tree in the courtyard enhanced the seasonal ambiance, while tools and a truck for transporting goods nearby revealed the genuine life of the temple.
Behind the main hall, a small prayer space nestled against a rocky wall featured a transparent glass container holding candles lit by visitors, each representing their wishes. Although it lacked the grandeur of large statues, the moss-covered rocks and the simple glass container conveyed heartfelt devotion.
The view of Goesan from the temple grounds and the ascending path was refreshing, showcasing a cozy village below and overlapping mountain peaks mingling with morning mist and light clouds.
Just the sight of this expansive view, along with the mountain breeze, made the trip to Bogwangsa worthwhile.
