A Refreshing Drive to Yesan Stork Park

In May, as the greenery deepens, I set off for a drive to Yesan, Chungnam, enjoying the pleasant spring breeze through the car window.
My destination was the 'Yesan Stork Park,' a place where nature and life thrive.
Nearby, I discovered 'Salmokji,' a hot travel spot recently known for its film shoots on social media.
The spacious parking lot provided a sense of ease right from the start.
As soon as I got out of the car, the fresh air and open scenery seemed to blow away the stress of city life.
1. Beginning the Journey: Eye Contact with Animal Friends
Standing at the entrance of the Stork Park, I carefully examined the large map and planned my own course for a fulfilling day.
My route included: 'Nature Experience Zone ➔ Eco Playground ➔ Toddler Forest Experience Zone ➔ Stork Wish Tower ➔ Stork Observation Area ➔ Stork Photo Zone ➔ Stork Cultural Center.'
As I walked, the striking sculpture titled 'The Splendid Resurrection of the Stork' in the park's center captivated my attention.
It seemed to convey the powerful energy of a stork soaring back from extinction.
Nearby, picnic tables under the shade of trees welcomed me warmly.
It was the perfect spot to enjoy a packed lunch and share stories.
The first place I visited was the Nature Experience Zone.
Here, I could meet adorable animal friends like horses, goats, sheep, and rabbits up close.
Some were resting in the shade, while others approached the fence with curious faces, asking for food.
This space allowed both children and adults to reconnect with their inner child and smile while interacting with the animals.
2. An Adventure in the Forest and a Place for Heartfelt Wishes
Near the Nature Experience Zone lies an eco playground filled with the laughter of children.
I followed the path to the 'Toddler Forest Experience Zone,' rich with phytoncides.
This area, preserved with the natural terrain, offers a wonderful adventure for kids.
From a soft sand playground to log balancing, cushioned wood chip play areas, fun tunnels, and even a treehouse and a thrilling suspension bridge!
It was filled with facilities that awaken the senses and allow for plenty of play in nature.
After enjoying the fresh air at the forest playground, I descended to find the 'Stork Wish Tower' waiting for me.
Historically, storks have been seen as auspicious birds that bring blessings, symbolizing fertility and health.
At this tower, visitors place small stones or hang wishes, making it a meaningful spot.
I too made a small wish for the health and happiness of my loved ones.
3. Graceful Wingbeats: A Marvelous Encounter with Real Storks
Passing the wish tower, I finally reached the highlight of my trip: the 'Stork Observation Area.'
Peering cautiously into the observation area, I was awestruck by the majestic storks gracefully enjoying their time.
Seeing them up close evoked a sense of mysterious wonder.
The stork is a precious bird designated as Natural Monument No. 199 and classified as a first-class endangered species.
Once a common sight across Korea, it disappeared completely from the peninsula in 1994 due to poaching and environmental destruction.
However, thanks to a restoration project, storks have successfully returned to us through artificial breeding and natural release in Yesan.
The contrast of their pure white bodies with black wing tips and long red legs creates a harmonious masterpiece of nature.
Next to the observation area, there is a photo zone for beautiful snapshots, a wetland experience area to glimpse diverse wetland ecosystems, and a natural adaptation area for storks preparing for the wild, enhancing the depth of this ecological journey.
4. Capturing Everything About Storks: The Stork Cultural Center
After my vivid encounter with the storks, I entered the 'Stork Cultural Center' to gain deeper knowledge.
The center exhibits how the stork, once extinct on the peninsula, soared again in Yesan, showcasing its touching history of revival and ecological information.
Inside, I found dioramas realistically depicting stork habitats, various video materials showing their growth and feeding activities, and interactive touch screens displaying migration routes of storks worldwide.
Especially in front of the life-sized stork model, I was once again amazed by its enormous wingspan.
After enjoying the culture, I went up to the second floor where a café awaited.
Sipping a refreshing cup of coffee while observing storks through the telescope on the outdoor terrace was a hidden gem of this cultural center.
As I left the park with a bittersweet feeling, I noticed the endless national ecological trails surrounding Stork Park.
The 'Stork Wind Path' is perfect for leisurely walks in the gentle May breeze, while the 'Stork Village Path' offers a taste of rural charm, and the 'Stork Wish Path' provides peace of mind.
If you have time, taking a slow stroll along these dirt paths to fully embrace nature is highly recommended.
The Yesan Stork Park allowed me to witness the miracle of life awakening from extinction and experience the preciousness of life firsthand.
Under the dazzling May sunlight, it is highly recommended as an excellent natural ecological learning space for children and a perfect healing drive route to wash away the fatigue of daily life.
