After contemplating where to go with my family,
we decided to try a different outing this weekend.
The National Love Park in Dangjin offers a chance to reflect on the meaning of patriotism while walking with family.
Located in Gwangmyeong-ri, Songak-eup, Dangjin-si, Chungcheongnam-do,
this memorial park was established to honor the sacrifices of our fallen heroes.
Upon arrival, a spacious grassy plaza welcomed us,
making it easy to stroll around without feeling overwhelmed.
For your information, vehicle access is permitted from 9 AM to 6 PM.
I chose not to head straight in but instead crossed the plaza slowly,
taking a moment to express gratitude for those who protected our nation.
As we passed the plaza, the iconic Memorial Tower of the National Love Park stood tall before us.
This grand tower, measuring 20 meters in height and 21 meters in width,
made both my child and me lower our voices instinctively.
The tower's design resembles a fan, rising towards the sky,
surrounded by various sculptures representing the spirit of sacrifice among soldiers.
Personally, I found the sculptures to convey a sense of dynamism,
as if they were reaching out towards something.
Perhaps they symbolize a hopeful future for South Korea after the war.
In front of the National Love Park, a guardian statue embodies a firm resolve to protect our homeland,
providing a great structure to explore the memorial and cenotaph.
A visit of about an hour is sufficient for a healing walk.
There are resting areas throughout the park,
making it a nice little retreat in the city.
While exploring the park, it’s better to pause and reflect in front of the tower and the memorial,
rather than focusing solely on taking photos.
To view the National Love Park from a higher perspective,
we slowly ascended along the healing trail.
Observing the combat equipment used by our military in the past,
I could feel the strength of South Korea’s defense.
Another effective way to appreciate the park is to read the inscriptions on the monuments.
Taking the time to look meaningfully at each building and sculpture
can leave a lasting impression, even on a short visit.
As a memorial space, it’s respectful to move quietly and calmly here.
If you’re considering when to visit, I recommend Memorial Day or Liberation Day,
but the park is open year-round,
allowing anyone to spend meaningful time with family whenever they wish.
The National Love Park is also the site of a New Year’s Day ceremony,
where commitments to civic development are made,
so visiting before a holiday can deepen the significance of that day.
I hope you have a meaningful time at the National Love Park in Dangjin this weekend.
