A Historical Journey in Dangjin: The Home of Teacher Son Byeong-hee

In Dangjin, Chungcheongnam-do, there is a meaningful place where one can enjoy a stroll while reflecting on significant events in modern Korean history.
This place is the former residence of Teacher Son Byeong-hee, located within the Forest Light Neighborhood Park.
This site is not merely an old house; it serves as a profound space to remember the history of national independence, connecting the Donghak Peasant Revolution and the March 1st Movement, making it a popular historical destination in Dangjin.
Teacher Son Byeong-hee is well-known as one of the 33 representatives of the March 1st Movement, but he was also a key figure dedicated to the values of independence and equality during the Donghak Peasant Revolution.
At that time, the Donghak Peasant Revolution was not just a popular uprising; it was a movement for independence against foreign invasion and an unjust social order. Teacher Son played a significant role in continuing that spirit and laying the foundation for the independence movement.
After the failure of the Donghak Peasant Revolution following the Battle of Ugeumchi in 1894, Teacher Son lived in seclusion for a while. From 1898 to 1899, he actively participated as the leader of the Donghak religion in Modong Village, Suchung-ri, Dangjin.
During this period, Dangjin was a crucial base for Teacher Son's efforts to maintain the national spirit, and to commemorate this, his former residence has been restored within the Forest Light Neighborhood Park.
After confirming Teacher Son's residence, Dangjin City restored the house in 2021 within the park.
The restored house, though not large, beautifully captures the charm of a simple and neat hanok (traditional Korean house).
Visitors can experience the atmosphere of the living space from that time, with the main building, walls, and foundation stones recreated. The neatly arranged courtyard adds a calm and serene ambiance.
Exploring the interior and surroundings of the house, one feels a sense of restrained elegance rather than flamboyance.
This atmosphere mirrors Teacher Son's steadfast beliefs during a turbulent era.
The neat structure of the hanok and the tranquil park scenery blend together, allowing visitors to reflect on historical significance while taking a leisurely walk.
Even after the Donghak Peasant Revolution, Teacher Son continued his activities to promote national consciousness.
He emphasized the importance of education and collaborated with various educational institutions, later leading the national enlightenment movement centered around Cheondogyo.
In 1919, he played a leading role in the independence declaration of the March 1st Movement as a representative of Cheondogyo, participating as one of the 33 national representatives.
This is a prime example of how the spirit of Donghak's independence led to the anti-Japanese independence movement.
His contributions were recognized when he was posthumously awarded the Order of Merit for National Foundation in 1962.
The significance of Teacher Son Byeong-hee's former residence is further enhanced by the nearby Dangjin Liberation Memorial Tower.
Reflecting on Teacher Son's life at the former residence and contemplating the meaning of the independence movement at the memorial tower allows for a natural understanding of our nation's history of self-reliance and independence.
Along the path leading deeper into the Forest Light Neighborhood Park, benches engraved with the names of regional independence activists are placed, creating a space that naturally reminds visitors of local independence fighters.
The park serves not only as a relaxation area but also as a space for historical education, making it feel special with traces honoring the spirit of independence throughout.
The Liberation Memorial Tower, erected in the center of the park, stretches powerfully toward the sky, symbolically expressing the joy of liberation and freedom.
The towering memorial tower evokes the strong will of those who sacrificed for the nation’s independence, leaving a deep impression on viewers.
Below the tower, a map is inscribed to provide an overview of the local history of the independence movement.
By following the organized historical signs, visitors can naturally learn that many dedicated their lives for the country's independence in Dangjin.
Exploring both Teacher Son Byeong-hee's former residence and the Liberation Memorial Tower vividly highlights the flow of national independence from the Donghak Peasant Revolution to the March 1st Movement.
Walking comfortably through the quiet park while reflecting on history makes it an invaluable historical destination in Dangjin.
