A Culinary Journey in Goesan

Must-Visit Places in Goesan County
Goesan, located in Chungbuk, is famous for its diverse food offerings, thanks to its unique geography of mountains and rivers. Here are four must-try dishes during your visit to Goesan.
1. Olgaengi-guk (Snail Soup)
This is the most representative local dish that comes to mind when thinking of Goesan. Freshly caught olgaengi (a type of freshwater snail) is carefully prepared and cooked with a mix of soybean paste, watercress, and chives. The soup is known for its refreshing and savory flavor, rich in vitamins and amino acids, making it great for liver recovery and hangover relief. You can easily find specialized restaurants in the olgaengi-guk street in downtown Goesan.
2. Spicy Freshwater Fish Stew (with Ppagasari and Sogari)
Goesan, surrounded by the Goegang and Dalcheon rivers, has a long history of freshwater fish cuisine. The stew, made with freshly caught ppagasari, sogari, and catfish, is cooked with spicy gochujang (red chili paste), boasting a deep and rich flavor. Adding chewy handmade dumplings makes it a special treat, and the broth is clean with no fishy smell.
3. Mushroom Jeongol (with Wild Matsutake and Neungi Mushrooms)
Goesan is also known for its high-quality mushrooms, thanks to its rugged terrain. The mushroom jeongol, filled with wild matsutake and neungi mushrooms harvested in the fall, is a nourishing dish. The unique aroma of the mushrooms infuses the broth, creating a healthy and mild flavor. Many restaurants near Huayang Nine Scenic Views or the Sanmaki Old Road specialize in this dish.
4. Goesan Sweet Corn
While not a dish, Goesan sweet corn is a top local specialty. This corn has a thinner skin and higher sugar content than regular corn, with kernels that are soft and chewy enough not to get stuck in your teeth. You can enjoy freshly steamed corn from roadside vendors throughout Goesan in the summer. Additionally, I recommend the corn rice cake set available at Kim Woo-yeon’s restaurant, which requires a reservation to taste.
For breakfast or lunch, enjoy a light and refreshing meal with olgaengi-guk, and in the evening, savor the spicy freshwater fish stew or mushroom jeongol while taking in the scenery near the Goegang River.
