Craving an escape from the exhausting summer heat and daily grind, I embarked on a spontaneous "P-style" day trip to the East Sea. Initially planned for Sokcho, the journey naturally flowed into Yangyang, leading me to the breathtaking Naksansa (낙산사). This temple is famous for granting sincere wishes and offering a spiritual reset amidst stunning coastal scenery.
From the panoramic views at Sokcho Lighthouse Observatory to the majestic Avalokiteśvara statue at Naksansa, this itinerary proved that even a short day trip can wash away lingering worries. Despite the vacation season traffic, the combination of ocean breezes, kind locals, and sacred spaces provided the ultimate healing experience for a tired mind.
Revisiting Sokcho: Ocean Views and Local Flavors
Returning to Sokcho after four years felt like meeting an old friend. While the landscape has changed with new high-rise apartments, the soul-soothing sound of the waves remains constant. Starting from the Sokcho Intercity Bus Terminal, a walk to Dongmyeong-dong’s Lighthouse Beach offered a quiet start, followed by the impressive sights of the nearby observatory.
The Sokcho Lighthouse Observatory provides a bird's-eye view of the international port and the mountains shrouded in clouds. Sitting on the rocks below, watching the water lap against the shore, truly makes your worries feel small. For lunch, "Alchan Grilled Fish" stood out not just for its neat and simple abalone stew, but for the heartwarming kindness of the owner.
Coastal Transit: The Scenic Bus to Yangyang
Taking the connecting bus from Sokcho to Yangyang is a trip in itself. The window views of Mulchi, Mongdol, and Naksan beaches are spectacular, showcasing the diverse shapes and colors of the East Sea. This route is perfect for those traveling without a car who still want to soak in the full beauty of the Gangwon-do coastline.
Naksansa Temple: Where Dreams and Scenery Meet
Arriving at Yangyang Naksansa Temple, the first thing that strikes you is the impeccable landscaping. The path to the main grounds, known as the "road where dreams come true," is lined with impressive stone pagodas and lush greenery. It’s a space designed to bring excitement and peace to every visitor, regardless of their background.
The highlight is the massive Haesu Gwaneum-sang (Avalokiteśvara statue) standing tall against the backdrop of the sea and clouds. Seeing this iconic figure in person, rather than just in paintings, is a powerful moment. The harmony of the mountains, the ocean, and the collective wishes of the people gathered there creates an atmosphere that is nothing short of "insane" in its beauty.
Hidden Gems: Gwaneumji Pond and Seaside Pavilions
Just when you think you've seen it all, Naksansa continues to unfold. Gwaneumji Pond, filled to the brim with greenery, offers a tranquil inland contrast to the crashing waves. Walking further brings you to pavilions perched on rocks right by the beach—a sight that rivals the world-famous rock bars of Bali. The sound of the East Sea echoing through the temple structures is a memory that sticks with you long after you leave.
Finishing the Journey: Sokcho Central Market
Before heading back to Seoul, a quick stop at the Sokcho Central Market is essential. While it's a food paradise, even a light dinner here captures the vibrant energy of the region. This spontaneous journey reminded me that great travel experiences don't always require months of planning or a trip abroad; sometimes, the best healing is just a bus ride away at the edge of the East Sea.
Have you ever taken a completely unplanned trip that turned out better than expected, or do you have a specific place by the sea that always recharges your soul? If you're visiting Yangyang, I also recommend checking out the nearby surf shops at Hajodae for a bit of adventure. What is your go-to wish when you visit a sacred place like Naksansa?
