남해 보리암

Located on the majestic Geumsan Mountain, Namhae Boriam (남해 보리암) is one of Korea's most famous temples, offering a spiritual escape paired with unparalleled ocean views. Known as a place where King Taejo Yi Seong-gye came to pray, it remains a powerful site for those seeking success and inner peace.
My journey took me through steep mountain paths to reach the hidden Geumsan Mountain Hut, where the simple pleasure of cup ramen meets a spectacular natural backdrop. From practical parking tips to the best photo spots, this guide covers everything you need to know for a memorable visit to this coastal sanctuary.
Getting to the Top: Parking and Access Tips
When you arrive at Boriam, you'll encounter two parking options. Parking Lot 1 is at the base, requiring a 15-minute shuttle bus ride to reach the temple area. To save time and enjoy a more direct route, I recommend waiting for a spot at Parking Lot 2. From there, it's just a 15-minute uphill walk through a path that reveals stunning vistas of the Namhae coastline at every turn.
Though the path is uphill, it is relatively well-maintained. I managed the walk in flip-flops, and many others were doing the same, though sneakers are definitely recommended for comfort. After reaching the ticket booth and completing the short hike, a quick trip down the stairs leads you directly into the heart of the temple complex.
A Place of Royal Prayers and Magnificent Scenery
Boriam is celebrated as one of Korea's four major prayer temples. Its historical significance is deep, tied to the founding of the Joseon Dynasty. The architecture is magnificent, but the true highlight is the "Haesu Gwaneum" statue overlooking the sea. This is the most iconic photo spot, where the deep blue Namhae waters create a breathtaking contrast with the temple structures.
Geumsan Mountain Hut: A Hidden Treasure
After exploring the temple, a visit to the Geumsan Mountain Hut (금산산장) is an absolute must. The trail to the hut is a bit steeper and more challenging than the path to Boriam, so be sure to watch your step and follow the signs carefully to avoid getting lost in the rocky terrain.
Finding the hut feels like discovering a hidden treasure. It offers a simple menu of cup ramen, water, and boiled eggs, but eating them while perched on the edge of a mountain makes it taste like a gourmet meal. The atmosphere is cozy and traditional, often shared with the many adorable cats that call Namhae home.
Ramen with a Million-Dollar View
There is something truly special about savoring warm ramen while gazing out at the islands dotting the Namhae sea. This experience is the highlight for many hikers and travelers. Even though the descent can be a bit tiring on the legs, the memory of that peaceful meal in the clouds makes every step worth it.
Have you ever tried mountain-top ramen while overlooking the ocean, or do you have a favorite "hidden gem" temple in Korea? If you're visiting Namhae, I also recommend checking out the nearby German Village for a unique cultural contrast. What's your favorite comfort food to enjoy after a long hike?
