Feeling the weight of daily life, I decided to take a spontaneous solo trip to Woljeongsa (월정사), a serene Buddhist temple nestled in the mountains. This journey was all about finding peace through the quiet temple grounds and the famous forest trails nearby.
From exploring the majestic stone pagoda to walking barefoot through a dense fir forest, the experience provided a much-needed mental reset. It is a perfect destination for anyone looking to reconnect with nature and enjoy a moment of stillness away from the city.
Exploring the Sacred Grounds of Woljeongsa Temple
The temple area was much more spacious than I had initially expected. As I walked in, I was immediately struck by the beautiful and intricate patterns adorning the traditional buildings. The atmosphere was calm, helped by the overcast sky which prevented any harsh glare during my walk.
Even though there was some construction happening on-site, it didn't take away from the spiritual presence of the temple. I took my time walking through the open courtyards, appreciating the effort put into maintaining such a significant cultural heritage site.
The Elegant Octagonal Nine-Story Stone Pagoda
One of the most breathtaking sights was the Octagonal Nine-Story Stone Pagoda. Its proportions are incredibly elegant, and it stands as a testament to ancient craftsmanship. I found myself standing before it for a long time, simply soaking in its magnificent aura.
I took a moment to bow my head, hoping to leave behind some of the worries I had been carrying. While I wanted to capture the beauty of the temple's interior, signs strongly discouraged indoor photography, so I focused on documenting the stunning exterior architecture instead.
Hidden Flowers and Temple Souvenirs
As I wandered behind the main halls, I was delighted to find small, colorful flowers blooming quietly in the corners. These little details made the walk even more special. The temple grounds are clearly loved and well-tended, creating a peaceful environment for every visitor.
Before heading to the forest, I stopped by the large souvenir shop. They had a wide variety of items, from traditional Buddhist supplies to modern magnets and even cute themed USB drives. I didn't buy anything this time, but I made a mental note to get a magnet when I return with my mother.
Walking the Healing Fir Forest Path
After leaving the temple, I entered the Fir Forest Path. This trail is a long loop that takes you deep into the woods, surrounded by the refreshing scents of nature. On a Monday, the path was quiet and perfect for a solo stroll, allowing me to hear the birds and the rushing water of the nearby stream.
The trees here grow incredibly tall, and looking up at the sky through the green canopy was a highlight of the trip. This forest was also a filming location for the famous drama 'Goblin'. While the drama showed a winter wonderland, the lush greenery of summer felt just as charming and full of life.
Barefoot Walking and Encountering Local Squirrels
I noticed many people taking advantage of the 'barefoot walking' trend on the dirt paths. I decided to join in and took off my shoes. The cool sensation of the earth was refreshing, though the occasional small stone made it a bit of a challenge for my unaccustomed feet.
During my walk, I was lucky enough to spot a squirrel! While there were many families gathered at the entrance trying to see them, I found a quiet one deeper in the woods that stayed still long enough for me to admire it. It was a small, joyful moment that made the solo walk feel even more rewarding.
Relaxing by the Odaecheon Stream
The final part of the loop takes you across a bridge to a wooden deck path along the Odaecheon Stream. This barrier-free trail is smooth and accessible for everyone, offering great views of the water. Only after finishing did I realize the stream I was admiring was the famous Odaecheon.
I also discovered a small area at the entrance where you can wash your feet in the flowing water. It was incredibly refreshing after the barefoot hike. This entire trip provided the perfect blend of culture and nature, leaving me with a much lighter heart and beautiful memories.
Have you ever tried walking barefoot in a forest to relieve stress, or do you have a favorite temple in Korea that offers a similar sense of peace? If you are planning a visit to Pyeongchang, I highly recommend including a stop at the nearby Sangwonsa Temple for a full mountain experience. What's your go-to destination for a spontaneous solo trip?
