SeMA Seoul Mediacity Biennale

Pre-Program of the 14th Seoul Mediacity Biennale: 'Poran'

Artwork Introduction

1. Mikael Karikis, 'Haenyeo', 2012

'Haenyeo' is an audiovisual installation that focuses on the work of female divers in Jeju Island and their unique auditory culture. The piece captures the daily lives, collective activities, and sounds resonating in shared spaces of these women through video and sound, quietly testifying to the eco-feminist labor of haenyeo, their community solidarity, and the identities of aging. For this exhibition, after close discussions with the artist, a version comprising three single-channel videos and stereo sound will be screened in the outdoor sculpture garden of the Nam Seoul Museum of Art. The design of this work ensures that sound does not subordinate the image, allowing the video and sound within the tent to coexist in the same space while remaining distinct.

2. Jakrawal Nilthamrong, 'In Transit', 2013 (2014 Film Conversion)

'In Transit' presents an epistemological and sensory exploration of the changing media landscape as we move away from the age of film. Through celluloid film and magnetic tape, tangible media that could be seen and touched have transitioned into the intangible forms of digital files due to technological advancements. This work, created in 2013 while exploring the sci-fi special effects of the 1960s, prompts us to revisit the media practices in Korean art history and reflect on the historical transitions of media alongside the accompanying sensory experiences. It raises questions about how technology and media reconstruct human senses and experiences, and what possibilities and new conditions or limitations arise from technological advancements and changes in the media environment regarding the preservation and enjoyment of artworks.

Exhibition Period: May 20, 2026 (Wed) – July 5, 2026 (Sun)

Location: 2nd Floor and Outdoor Garden, Nam Seoul Museum of Art
