Discovering the Artistic Legacy of Lee Ungno at the Lee Ungno House
If you're planning a trip to Hongseong, Chungcheongnam-do, make sure to visit a cultural space that is truly worth your time: the Lee Ungno House, also known as the Lee Ungno Memorial Museum!
This museum showcases the life and works of the world-renowned artist Lee Ungno. Currently, it features fascinating exhibitions, including special and educational displays that enhance your visit.
Located at 61-7 Lee Ungno-ro, Hongbuk-eup, Hongseong-gun, the museum operates from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. It is closed every Monday (or the following Tuesday if Monday is a holiday) and on January 1st, as well as during the Lunar New Year and Chuseok holidays.
The admission fee is 1,000 KRW for adults and 500 KRW for children, teenagers, and soldiers. Entry is free for those under 6 years old, seniors over 65, people with disabilities, and veterans.
So, who is Lee Ungno? Born in 1904 in Hongseong, he is a prominent painter who introduced modern Korean art to the world. Although he learned calligraphy and traditional Eastern painting from a young age, he constantly sought new forms of expression. His works, such as the series of figurative abstractions and the dynamic line artworks, remain beloved to this day.
In the late 1950s, he moved to France, where he seamlessly blended Eastern and Western art, solidifying his status as a global artist.
During my visit, I had the opportunity to explore the special exhibition titled 'Expanding Lines' along with the educational exhibition 'Together, Differently.' Both exhibitions will run until July 12, 2026, so be sure to check them out if you plan to visit!
The essence of Lee Ungno's work lies in 'lines.' They are not just the strokes of a brush; they represent his unique perspective on the world. The exhibitions flow from 'Contemplative Lines' to 'Transformative Lines,' 'Formative Lines,' and 'Expanding Lines,' allowing visitors to appreciate his artistic journey from early works to his figurative abstraction series.
As I observed the pieces, I felt the artist's philosophy and reflections on his era embedded within each line. It was fascinating to compare how his expression evolved over time, even within the same artist's body of work.
Another engaging exhibition was 'Together, Differently.' It encouraged visitors to view artworks from personal perspectives rather than seeking definitive meanings. By examining pieces from different distances and focusing on specific details, I discovered how the same work could evoke entirely different feelings.
Sharing insights with others further enriched the experience, highlighting the diverse interpretations of the same artwork.
The Lee Ungno Memorial Museum is more than just a gallery; it is a place where you can gradually explore an artist's life and philosophy. Visiting the ongoing exhibitions 'Expanding Lines' and 'Together, Differently' deepened my understanding of his works, making the experience highly satisfying.
