Recently, I've been obsessed with bread! My usual preference was for meal breads like sausage bread, pizza bread, and garlic bread. However, oddly enough, I've found myself enjoying plain baguettes lately! Perhaps it's a sign of getting older...
So, I've been going on bread tours to various places.
Standard Bread has three locations in Seoul: Gangnam Shinsegae, Dosan, and Seongsu. I visited the Dosan branch.
While I was in the area for an errand, I came across Standard Bread while searching for a café and decided to drop by.
I had seen Standard Bread on a YouTube channel featuring Lee Won-il and Hong Seok-cheon, and I was eager to try their French toast, so I saved it as a must-visit spot.
The bakery occupies an entire building, with the first floor dedicated to purchasing bread, and seating available from the second to the fourth floors for dining in.
Despite the spaciousness, the seating arrangement was somewhat close due to the popularity of the place.
Each floor has a different ambiance, allowing you to choose a floor based on your mood that day, which is a nice touch.
Upon entering, there's a cute display of the bread-making process right next to you.
Standard Bread is famous for its fresh bread, particularly the signature French toast made from their freshly baked bread.
They offer over ten varieties of fresh bread, including salted butter, orange Earl Grey, basil tomato, black olive, and chocolate, making it hard to choose!
The lighting also enhances the appeal of the bread, making it look even more appetizing, and I wanted to try them all.
Next to the fresh bread, they have a variety of bagels with over ten different cream cheese options, making it easy to create delicious combinations.
Finally, their most signature dish is the French toast! It's made fresh upon ordering, and watching it being prepared made it impossible not to order it.
Ultimately, I couldn't resist and ordered the salted butter fresh bread and pistachio French toast.
The fresh bread is ready to grab from the display, while the French toast takes about six minutes to prepare, and you get a vibrating alert when it's ready.
First, the salted butter fresh bread, baked with a generous sprinkle of salt, emitted a delightful buttery aroma.
It was warm and fresh, and you know you should tear fresh bread along its grain, right?
Tearing it apart revealed a soft interior, while the bottom was crispy, baked in butter, enhancing the flavor of the salted butter fresh bread.
Next was the pistachio French toast, served in a cast-iron pan to keep it warm, layered with pistachio cream underneath.
It was topped with a piece of butter and a generous sprinkle of chopped pistachios.
To enjoy this French toast fully, you should cut it and soak the inside in the cream below.
The top was slightly crispy like crème brûlée, and I felt glad I chose the pistachio option over the crème brûlée.
With pistachios in every bite, the rich flavor and the soft, moist texture of the toast combined with the crispy bits made it clear why this is their signature dish.
Surprisingly sweet, it felt perfect for a quick energy boost on a tiring day!
Although I initially planned to just stop by for a quick visit, I ended up indulging in two pieces of bread due to their enticing visuals.
The top part of the fresh bread didn't seem particularly special, but the bottom revealed why it was so popular.
As for the French toast, it was rich in flavor, and I would definitely order it again on my next visit.
If you love bread, I highly recommend visiting "Standard Bread Dosan" for a delightful experience with plenty of options to enjoy.
