Exploring Hyunrae Jang: A Culinary Gem in Mapo

In the heart of Mapo, just a few steps from Exit 4 of Mapo Station on Line 5, an old sign catches the eye.
This is Hyunrae Jang, a Chinese restaurant that has been a favorite among locals and food enthusiasts for over 60 years.
While many flashy fusion Chinese restaurants have emerged, Hyunrae Jang continues to serve traditional hand-pulled noodles and authentic Chinese cuisine.
Featured on all three major broadcasting stations, it is so popular that patrons often have to wait in line during lunch and dinner hours.
During my visit, I ordered the Old Style Jajangmyeon, Sweet and Sour Pork (small), and Fried Dumplings.
All three dishes showcased the restaurant's signature basics, making my choices completely satisfying.

Hyunrae Jang specializes in traditional hand-pulled noodles since the 1950s.

Old Style Jajang: 9,500 KRW

All noodle dishes are served with hand-pulled noodles, and an extra serving costs an additional 1,000 KRW.
■ Taste Review
The Old Style Jajangmyeon arrived first, exuding a fragrant smoky aroma.
The glossy, thick jajang sauce was rich and savory, with a depth of flavor that emphasized umami over sweetness.
The noodles maintained a chewy texture typical of hand-pulled noodles, showcasing the restaurant's long-standing expertise.
Next, the Sweet and Sour Pork (small) featured a high meat ratio and a thin batter, representing the classic style.
The exterior was crispy while the inside remained moist, and the sweet and sour sauce was perfectly balanced without being overwhelming.
Notably, the batter stayed crispy until the last piece, allowing for a pleasant dining experience.
The fried dumplings had a wonderfully light dough, packed with filling but not greasy, making them a perfect complement to the jajangmyeon.
The balance of meat and vegetables was excellent, and the light oiliness made them an appetizing start to the meal.

Hyunrae Jang offers access to a public parking lot, with one hour of free parking for diners.
For those visiting by subway, it is very convenient to use Exit 4 of Mapo Station, just a 2-minute walk away.

Founded in the early 1950s, Hyunrae Jang began in a small alley in Mapo, where the founder established a philosophy of "betting on noodles" based on traditional hand-pulled noodle techniques learned in China.
This spirit continues today, as the restaurant, now in its second generation, serves honest flavors with handmade noodles rather than machine-made ones.
