Visiting the Changnyeong Memorial Tower

I Sang-hyun, 15th Changnyeong County Blog Reporter, 2026
June is a month of remembrance, marked by Memorial Day and the Korean War. I visited the Changnyeong Memorial Tower, a site dedicated to honoring the spirits of those who sacrificed their lives for the country.
Located at 301 Changnyeong-daero, Changnyeong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, the memorial is free to enter and is open year-round.
The Changnyeong Memorial Tower is situated in Toechon-ri, Changnyeong-eup, behind the Changnyeong Public Stadium, making it easy to find.
There is a parking lot available, and restroom facilities are provided for visitors' convenience.
As I parked my car and walked slowly towards the entrance, I noticed that the area was well-maintained.
The tower is surrounded by mountains and trees, with various flowers planted throughout the grounds. Although it is a solemn memorial space, the natural setting creates a serene atmosphere.
The memorial area includes the Changnyeong Memorial Tower, the Hall of Remembrance, and the Peace Guardian Statue of the New Millennium.
This site was established to honor the noble spirits of the fallen heroes and to convey the meaning of love for the country to future generations, reflecting the wishes of the residents of Changnyeong.
To the right of the entrance, there is an informational sign. Originally built in 1969 in Jikgye-ri, Changnyeong-eup, it was moved to its current location in 2000.
The plaza in front of the tower serves as a venue for various memorial events, including Memorial Day ceremonies. During my visit, I noticed preparations for an upcoming event. The area is always open for those wishing to take a moment for remembrance.
At the base of the tower, there is an incense burner, and chrysanthemums were neatly arranged in front of the altar.
I paused for a moment to offer a silent prayer.
June is a time to reflect on gratitude and appreciation. Although the mood may be somber, visiting the memorial encourages thoughts of thankfulness and responsibility.
Nearby stands the Peace Guardian Statue, symbolizing the values of peace and patriotism, providing comfort to the spirits of the fallen.
The image of a child playing a flute alongside angelic wings is striking. Looking up at it evokes feelings of gratitude for those who sacrificed for our country.
Moving to the back, I found the Hall of Remembrance, dedicated to honoring those who devoted themselves to the nation. Unfortunately, access was restricted during my visit.
Next to the plaza, there are resting areas with benches where visitors can sit and relax. While the nearby public stadium may be bustling, the area around the memorial remains tranquil.
Our ability to live ordinary lives without war is thanks to the sacrifices of many. During this month of remembrance, consider visiting the Changnyeong Memorial Tower to express your gratitude and reflect on the significance of our country.
