Ulsan Taehwa River Festival: A Vibrant Celebration of Spring

Every year, before Buddha's Birthday, Ulsan hosts its representative spring festival at the Taehwa River National Garden.
This year, the traditional Taehwa Lantern Festival has been renamed the 'Ulsan Taehwa Garam Festival' and has expanded to include the International Temple Food Culture Festival, significantly upgrading both its scale and attractions.
The new slogan, 'Connecting through Light, Connecting through Compassion,' resonated with me during my visit.
As a citizen of Ulsan who has seen the Taehwa River since childhood, this year felt different. I could physically feel the festival's growth in scale.

Upon arriving in the afternoon, I was surprised by the large crowd.
The festival was clearly thriving, indicating a high level of interest from Ulsan citizens.
However, the overwhelming number of people made the restrooms insufficient, which was a bit disappointing.
As the festival grows, I hope the facilities will expand accordingly.
Let's first explore the experience booths.
Small and Medium Enterprises & Local Products Exhibition
As soon as you enter the festival, you encounter the Small and Medium Enterprises & Local Products Exhibition. This space is designed for general citizens to enjoy without any religious barriers.
Exhibits and sales of local products from Ulsan and Gyeongnam were on display, making it an ideal spot to pick up a local souvenir.
Meditation Experience Zone - A Surprising Space
A meditation experience zone was set up at the festival, providing a moment of calm amidst the lively atmosphere.
There was also a digital meditation program that combined traditional Buddhist meditation with modern technology.
The 108 Prostrations Experience booth was popular, attracting even those without religious backgrounds.
One elementary student found it challenging but still enjoyed the experience.
Heavenly Realm Exhibition - From Work to Bliss
This booth brought me the most laughter, featuring illustrations that connected Buddhist philosophy with the daily lives of modern workers.
It was refreshing to see humor incorporated into a Buddhist festival, making it relatable to everyone.
International Temple Food Culture Festival - The Hottest Booth This Year
This festival showcased various temple foods from Korea, Vietnam, China, and Japan, drawing significant attention.
The highlight was the food prepared by Monk Seonjae, who gained fame on a cooking show.
Even without tasting it, seeing the food prepared live was exciting.
Food Zone - The Essence of the Festival
The food zone was crowded, making it difficult to grab a bite.
Despite the long lines, enjoying festival food among the crowd is part of the experience.
As the day progressed, the stage events became vibrant, with lively performances that delighted both children and adults.
As night fell, the true essence of the festival began to shine with lanterns illuminating the Taehwa River.
The exhibition of grand lanterns transformed the festival into a magical space.
Finally, the fireworks show capped off the evening, leaving us eagerly anticipating next year.
While there were some shortcomings, I am proud of the festival's growth and look forward to next year's event.
If you missed this year's Ulsan Taehwa Garam Festival, I highly recommend visiting next year!
