Seeking Comfort in a Fast-Paced World
In today's fast-paced world, we experience various events in our lives. At times, we feel happy, while at other times, we may feel stressed. The current generation often cites difficulties in relationships as a significant source of stress.
To cope with the challenges of relationships, many seek healing in their own ways. Some embark on journeys, while others immerse themselves in hobbies or escape into the online world through gaming.
Interestingly, many people find healing and recovery from stress and wounds inflicted by human interactions through animals. Animals, being familiar companions, provide comfort through shared moments and silent companionship, often proving to be more supportive than humans.
The increasing number of pet owners each year reflects this cultural trend. In January, I visited an intriguing exhibition titled "The Value of Connection with Animals" at the Ulsan Jung-gu Cultural Center.
The Exhibition Space and Its Surroundings
Located on Cultural Street, the Ulsan Jung-gu Cultural Center is easily accessible, with a public parking lot nearby. It is situated in the heart of Ulsan, surrounded by many attractions, including the city art museum, making it a great spot for an exhibition tour.
This exhibition, featuring the work of artist Eun Seon-kyung, runs from January 2 to January 18. As it is free, anyone can visit and enjoy the artworks during the exhibition period.
Inside the Ulsan Jung-gu Cultural Center
The first floor of the center, known as "Cultural Factory Seongnam," hosts various exhibitions. Other floors are equipped with practice rooms for music and dance, as well as spaces for clubs and gatherings, which are available for rent. These facilities are particularly useful for those in need of space, with some rooms available for free use.
Now, let’s take a look at the exhibition space on the first floor. With the growing pet population, interest in animals has significantly increased. We will explore how Eun Seon-kyung perceives the connection with animals.
Animals as a Source of Healing
Upon entering the exhibition, I was reminded of a photography exhibition held by the Natural History Museum in the UK in 2024, which showcased stunning wildlife photographs from around the world. This exhibition featured award-winning works from a global competition.
While the previous exhibition displayed photographs, Eun Seon-kyung's work is expressed through paintings. Her pieces evoke comfort and joy, often depicting animals in serene settings. Though they can be appreciated individually, together they create a cohesive landscape.
While we often interact with familiar pets, encountering wildlife is rare, leading us to visit zoos. The animals in her paintings are portrayed living freely in nature, their warm gazes providing a sense of healing and connection.
For animal lovers, simply viewing these artworks can evoke memories and feelings of communication with the animals. A distinctive feature of these pieces is that each animal holds a flower, symbolizing their unique way of expressing love.
I hope visitors to the exhibition can experience the warmth and comfort conveyed by Eun Seon-kyung's 19 oil paintings of animals.
