The Future of Transportation: Autonomous Buses in Anyang

Have you ever seen a bus driven by an invisible person?
This is not a scene from a movie.
It is a magical reality currently happening on the roads of Gyeonggi Province.
I visited the Anyang Smart City Integrated Center, the site of this innovation.
The history of connection: Bridging hearts and minds
It all began with the postal service, connecting people through information and communication.
April 22 is 'Information and Communication Day.'
140 years ago, the postal service connected hearts; today, Anyang connects the safety of residents with advanced data.
The value of 'connection' that once resided in a postal worker's bag has evolved into lightning-fast data through ICT (Information and Communication Technology).
Anyang's autonomous driving initiative is rooted in the success of the Fantag Bus, which was the first to operate on public bus routes in South Korea.
The data accumulated at the Gyeonggi Autonomous Driving Center has now developed into tailored services that practically support citizens' daily lives in Anyang.
A prime example is the autonomous bus 'Juyaro.'
'Juyaro' operates different routes based on the time of day, enhancing the convenience of movement for citizens.
During the day, it fills transportation gaps around Beomgye Station, and at night, it serves the bustling area between Indukwon Station and Anyang Station, becoming a reliable option for late-night travelers.
The pinnacle of this technology is the driverless shuttle 'ROII,' which circulates near the Anyang City Hall.
ROII operates without a driver's seat or steering wheel, relying on advanced sensors for navigation.
A citizen I met at the site expressed, "Having ridden countless cars in my life, seeing a vehicle without a steering wheel stop more smoothly than a person was astonishing. I felt like a character in a futuristic movie and highly recommend trying it out."
Anyang's autonomous driving is realized through V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) technology, enabling real-time data exchange between vehicles and surrounding infrastructure.
The Anyang Smart City Integrated Center transmits signal information to vehicles in 0.1-second intervals, reading invisible risks in blind spots and preventing accidents.
The center's focus extends beyond vehicles, delving into the daily lives of citizens.
The 'Smartphone Safety Return' service, initiated in Anyang, monitors the location of residents walking alone at night, providing a reliable companion during risky moments.
This innovative smart city system fills real-time safety gaps, ensuring the protection of citizens' lives.
To experience these innovations firsthand, I recommend visiting the promotional experience center at the Anyang Smart City Integrated Center.
It is a unique opportunity to see how technology is bridging people together.
