Meet Choi Ji-yu: A Unique Fitness Entrepreneur in Ulsan

This young entrepreneur, who previously worked as an athlete in Ulsan, leveraged her sports background to start her own business.
Despite the presence of similar businesses in Ulsan, she has created a unique space by incorporating her experiences and philosophies as an athlete into her offerings.
We had the opportunity to meet Choi Ji-yu, the founder of RecordFit, who promotes the slogan 'Exercise is for a Lifetime.'
Q1. Introduction
Hello, I am Choi Ji-yu from RecordFit.
Having lived as an athlete for my entire life, I have been a trainer for about 11 years and have been running my business for 3 years. When I stopped competing, I wanted to create a fitness center that embodies my philosophy, focusing on health rather than just physical appearance. Thus, I founded 'RecordFit.'
In addition, I also conduct vocational lectures for students at Ulsan University of Science and Technology and Ulsan Sports Science High School, as well as coaching for athletes with disabilities.
Q2. Motivation for Starting the Business
I was a discus thrower for Ulsan City Hall and spent a total of 15 years as an athlete. Originally from Gangwon Province, I settled in Ulsan after joining the city hall in 2015.
My athletic career ended due to a back injury, which sparked my interest in understanding pain and how to regain health. After quitting sports, I decided to study rehabilitation and pain management more deeply. While working part-time at a gym, I was offered a position as a trainer.
Initially, I was hesitant about starting a new career, but I found it appealing to work in a field that combined my interests in pain and exercise. I have since grown as a trainer, helping members improve their pain and regain their health.
As my clientele grew, I developed the goal of running a center that reflects my philosophy. I realized that Ulsan residents value long-term, trustworthy relationships over new trends.
This conviction led me to establish RecordFit.
Q3. Differentiation from Other Centers
While gyms are typically associated with building muscle, I believe that physical appearance is temporary. I want to create a center that welcomes all age groups, from teenagers to seniors, as the latter truly need exercise.
My goal is not only to create aesthetically pleasing bodies but also to manage health and pain, offering a space for everyone from children to seniors.
I aim to create a good environment for my parents' generation to exercise.
Q4. Challenges After Starting the Business
After 10 years as a trainer, I am not worried about managing operations. However, finding staff who share my philosophy and service vision is challenging.
It would be ideal to have a few like-minded individuals running the center together, but finding those who align with my vision is not easy.
Q5. Sense of Fulfillment
Seeing a mother who hobbled in leave with a smile, saying her legs feel lighter, brings me the most joy.
My slogan, 'Exercise is for a Lifetime,' embodies the belief that exercise is not just about achievement but a part of life. Witnessing people leave my space with smiles fills me with pride.
Many times, satisfied clients return with friends, which also adds to my fulfillment.
Q6. Thoughts on Living in Ulsan
I have noticed some resistance to new ideas in the community. Although many fitness centers have opened, innovative concepts like wellness and age-specific programs struggled to take root.
Ulsan is a good city for entrepreneurs due to the stable consumer base, but there is definitely some reluctance to embrace change.
I hope Ulsan can be more open to transformation. I believe there are people who desire change, and the community is gradually evolving.
Q7. Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs
Many people tend to overprepare before starting a business. I believe the opposite.
You need to have an idea and be ready to present it, but if you have a passion, timing shouldn't hold you back. Opportunities arise from various places.
Experience can be gained after starting, and entrepreneurship is not a short-term endeavor. I recommend taking action as soon as you have a thought.
Focus on building your stamina and be ready to work hard. In today's world, many share similar ideas, so those who take the first step will succeed.
Utilize government support programs, as there are many willing to help once you start your business.
Q8. Final Thoughts
I encourage everyone with dreams to pursue their goals without fear of challenges or others' opinions.
If you are considering entrepreneurship, I hope my story inspires even one person to take action. Such individuals will contribute to building the nation and advancing Ulsan.
My hope is that sharing my story, along with those of other entrepreneurs, will spark movement and change.
Choi Ji-yu, who once focused solely on her career as an athlete, has embraced entrepreneurship and is creating a new path. Having come to Ulsan for her career, she now cherishes the community and its people. We look forward to seeing the healthier Ulsan she envisions.
