Exploring Ulsan's Traditional Market in Winter

What places should we visit during a winter trip to Ulsan?
While the city offers beautiful beaches, serene rivers, and healthy forests, we decided to explore a traditional market that we often encounter in our daily lives.
In the heart of Ulsan, there are several traditional markets, and we visited the Nammok Maseong Market, located in the urban area.
In the early 2020s, merchants renamed the market from Nammok Traditional Market to Nammok Maseong Market, adding the historical story of the Nammok area, which was known for raising military horses during the Joseon Dynasty.
Historically, places that bred horses were often transport hubs. Supplying horses was essential during the Joseon era.
Nammok Maseong Market is one of the markets that has transformed into a cultural tourism market.
The market hosts various events every year, including emotional theme lighting installations, market tour programs linked to Jujeon Mongdol Beach as part of the Ulsan City Tour, and children's shopping events.
Ulsan is also an industrial city that has undergone rapid changes since the Korean War. Despite being a massive industrial city, you can still find the old scenery of traditional markets and the nostalgia of the 70s and 80s in the alleys.
The Nammok Maseong Market was larger than I expected. The facilities are clean, and the arcade allows for shopping even in rain or snow.
Offering a comfortable and pleasant space, the Nammok Maseong Market has ample parking, making it easily accessible.
Established in the late 1970s, Nammok Maseong Market is a traditional market selling locally grown agricultural products, seafood, and manufactured goods.
This year, it is said that the economy may not be very good in 2026 either. Recent visits to various places confirm that the economy is not what it used to be.
Every alley has food stalls, and winter fruits that you want to buy catch your eye. Strawberries have just started to come out.
Traditional markets are also making efforts to attract younger crowds. Ulsan is hosting art fairs, busking performances, and street exhibitions to enhance communication between citizens and artists.
The Ulsan City Tour, operated by the Ulsan Cultural Tourism Foundation, is holding special events for the Christmas season. The stamp tour will run until the 14th, allowing participants to visit major tourist attractions in Ulsan on a Christmas event bus.
If you visit Ulsan in December, riding the Christmas-themed bus could create unique memories. The bus is decorated like a moving Christmas cabin, featuring Rudolph's horns and garlands on the outside, while the inside boasts a tree, large teddy bears, and lights, making it a perfect photo spot for all ages.
When visiting traditional markets, I sometimes buy a bottle of Sikhye to enjoy while walking around. Traditional market Sikhye seems to taste sweeter for some reason.
I hope December will be a time to feel the warmth of people while experiencing the Ulsan City Tour and visiting traditional markets. And how about welcoming 2026 with a bit more energy?
