Exploring Ulsan City Art Museum: A Family-Friendly Experience

Since its opening in 2022, the Ulsan City Art Museum has been hosting high-quality exhibitions, attracting a steady stream of visitors!
Since last November, original works by Van Gogh have been exhibited for the first time in Ulsan, drawing significant interest.
This museum features a variety of exhibitions, from Van Gogh's masterpieces to works by Nam June Paik and Tony Oursler, as well as exhibitions for children, making it a perfect family outing.
Ulsan City Art Museum
Address - 72 Misulgwan-gil, Jung-gu, Ulsan
Operating Hours - 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM
Closed every Monday
The museum is closed on January 1st and every Monday. If Monday is a public holiday, the museum will be closed the following day. It's a good idea to check in advance to avoid visiting on a closed day.
Admission is very affordable, with tickets priced at 1,000 won for adults, 700 won for university students, military personnel, and artists, and just 500 won for Ulsan residents.
On weekdays, there is one guided tour per day, and on weekends, there are three. If you time your visit accordingly, you can enjoy a more in-depth experience.
One of the most striking pieces on the first floor is Nam June Paik's Turtle. Seeing the thick monitor brought back memories of that era.
Viewing it from above adds a lively perspective, so be sure to check it out from the upper level.
Works by second-generation video artist Tony Oursler blend video, sculpture, and installations, making for an enjoyable viewing experience. Familiar elements like remote controls, water, and faces made it accessible for children.
Many visitors stood in front of the works, and I hope they felt the psychological changes the pieces evoke.
The exhibition space features not only Van Gogh's works but also modern art, showcasing pieces from notable modern and contemporary artists, including Elaine de Kooning, Cy Twombly, and Marina Abramović, alongside 54 artists from Korea such as Kim Soo-ji and Jeong Chang-seop.
I appreciated the opportunity to see various artworks in one place. As someone not working in the arts, chances to encounter such pieces are rare. I was delighted to have this experience at the Ulsan City Art Museum!
And the highlight was meeting Van Gogh's original work, Portrait of a Farmer, which reflects his inner self and perception of reality before Sunflowers and Starry Night.
Seeing pieces that I had only encountered in books or photos was a refreshing experience. The back of the painting showed traces of time, including auction dates.
On the third floor, there are regular children's exhibitions. Currently, the exhibition Face Swipe, Heart Talk runs until March this year.
The atmosphere is bright, and the characters appear cute and whimsical. However, upon closer inspection, you can see a range of emotions displayed, from smiling to crying faces.
Children were engaged with the artworks, showing interest in each piece. After viewing, they can enjoy a stamp experience and coloring activities related to the artist's works, making for a fulfilling museum visit.
The Ulsan City Art Museum hosts a variety of exhibitions that create interesting experiences for both adults and children. As a resident of Ulsan, I'm thrilled to have more opportunities to engage with art. I hope more meaningful exhibitions will be held in the future, and for those who haven't visited yet, I encourage you to go!
