Exploring the Rose Gardens of Ilgwang New Town

The season of blooming roses is upon us.
"You smell like flowers, waking the sleeping me."
Though it’s a song from the 1970s, it’s the first that comes to mind when spring arrives.
I visited the Rose Learning Center in Ilgwang New Town to see the roses.
While there are rose gardens in Jeonggwan New Town, such as Wiggol Park and Gumokjeong Park, I was curious about the one in Ilgwang New Town.
The Rose Learning Center in Ilgwang New Town is located at three sites: Hudong Reservoir, Samsung Reservoir, and Samsung Stream.
In 2021, the Gimhae District created eco-friendly spaces at Samsung and Hudong Reservoirs, which are disaster prevention facilities, allowing residents to enjoy health and nature.
They transformed wet reservoirs into dry ones, landscaped parts of the ground, created walking paths, and planted shade trees to provide a pleasant walking experience in the urban environment.
Along the reservoir slopes, rose gardens were established, complete with a circular deck walkway, scenic lighting, and experiential learning spaces.
The Hudong Reservoir Rose Learning Center is located at 857 Samsung-ri, Ilgwang-myeon. You can find it by searching for 'Hudong Front Yard Reservoir Park' on Naver Maps.
The deck walkway, lined with metasequoias, made for a pleasant stroll. However, it’s advisable to bring a sunshade or hat as there isn’t much shade during the day.
There’s a café-like resting area that was cool and breezy, featuring an impressive crescent-shaped sculpture.
Exercise equipment is installed below the deck, making it a great spot for light workouts or walks with pets.
The rose garden on both sides of the park has signs indicating the names and characteristics of the roses, many of which I encountered for the first time.
The name 'Tess of the d'Urbervilles' is derived from Thomas Hardy's novel, while 'Rene van Wegberg' is an edible rose known for its sweet strawberry flavor.
The 'Abraham Darby' rose is a British variety, known for its large blooms, making it unsuitable for vase decoration.
It was fascinating to learn about the characteristics of each rose rather than just admiring them.
The Samsung Reservoir Rose Learning Center is also designed as an urban walking and running space.
The park is designed lower than the ground level, with wooden decks connecting the rose-themed walking paths seamlessly.
During the blooming season in May and June, the small rose garden and night lighting attract many visitors for evening strolls.
The soft lighting installed throughout the deck adds a charming ambiance, especially the full moon-shaped lights, enhancing the evening atmosphere.
I noticed that the blooming of roses here appeared slightly delayed compared to Hudong Reservoir.
The Samsung Stream Rose Learning Center stretches along the Samsung Stream walkway.
You can see various beautifully named roses like Queen Elizabeth, Christopher Columbus, and Fragrant Lady.
There are pretty bridges and swings along the way, perfect for resting while enjoying the scenery.
They have also created a 'Rose Light Theme Road' with themed lights, allowing for 24-hour enjoyment of the roses, especially beautiful at night.
I saw several people biking, and the bright lights make it safe to walk or ride along the blooming paths at night.
The roses in Ilgwang New Town are predominantly tall, managed naturally along the walking paths for an enjoyable experience.
*None of the three locations have dedicated parking. It’s advisable to use public transport or nearby commercial parking areas.
While you can use nearby convenience stores, it’s best to prepare water and snacks in advance.
