There are days when you want to escape the repetitive routine and noise of the city to find some peace of mind. You don't have to travel far; a hidden gem in Sejong Special Self-Governing City captivates visitors with a mystical and exotic atmosphere reminiscent of ancient Buddhist sites in Southeast Asia.

Nestled quietly at the foot of Sudad Mountain, Songam Temple is a wellness spot that boasts a unique landscape distinct from typical temples. The numerous stone towers throughout the temple grounds create a majestic ambiance, offering visitors a fresh visual shock and a space for deep contemplation.

With no entrance or parking fees, this serene sanctuary is open year-round, making it easy for families to visit without financial burden. You can fully embrace the space where nature and religious devotion intertwine.

The dedicated parking area right in front of the temple is also free of charge. However, visitors should note that there are no restrooms within the temple grounds. It is advisable to use the public restrooms at a nearby reservoir, located about a 10-minute drive away, before entering the temple.

The identity of Songam Temple is represented by over 500 massive stone towers, constructed through the unwavering dedication of a monk over 45 years. The head monk, who became a monk at the age of 32, built these towers with his bare hands, gathering stones without any blueprints or modern equipment.

Ranging from large stone pagodas reaching up to 9 meters to charming mini towers, each structure showcases its own unique form. Despite enduring decades of fierce storms, none of the towers have ever collapsed, demonstrating their remarkable sturdiness. Strolling among them while gazing at the small Buddha statues perched atop each tower is a delightful experience.

In the heart of the temple grounds lies the 'Manbuljeon', a hall that boldly breaks away from traditional tiled-roof styles and features an unusual dome shape. Upon entering, visitors are immediately overwhelmed by the sight of a large golden Buddha statue and sturdy stone pillars made from natural rocks.

Particularly striking are the more than 10,000 small Buddha statues that tightly embrace the walls, creating a serene yet powerful atmosphere. Sitting quietly in this space, where the natural stone pillars intersect, allows modern individuals burdened by urban burnout to feel their complicated minds gradually purifying.

The intricately designed tranquil pond at the entrance of the temple serves as a wonderful visual prelude to the visit. When the wind calms, the surface of the pond becomes mirror-like, reflecting the gentle mountain contours and the unique silhouette of the hall, creating a watercolor-like scene.

As you walk along the trail, you'll encounter eight quaint halls and a 'rock cave' precisely crafted from the mountainside rocks. The cold natural spring that flows year-round inside the cave serves as a refreshing oasis for weary hikers.
