Exploring the Kimpo Peace Trail: A Journey Through History and Nature

[Reporter: Go Do-hye]
Step by step, following the steadfast breath of our ancestors,
along the tranquil waters of the Yeomha River beyond the cold barbed wire,
we can fully experience the 'Kimpo Peace Trail Course 1'.
Shall we embark on a profound walking journey where history, nature, and the meaning of peace coexist?
The Peace Trail begins at the DMZ, connecting four districts in Gyeonggi Province (Kimpo, Goyang, Paju, and Yeoncheon),
spanning a total of 12 courses over approximately 189 km.
Originally established along the barbed wire and coastal paths that symbolized division and conflict,
it has now transformed into a healing space where one can appreciate the invaluable essence of peace.
This time, we introduce the Kimpo Peace Trail Course 1,
the Yeomha River Barbed Wire Trail, which symbolizes the starting point of the entire Peace Trail journey,
embracing historical relics and the scenic beauty of the Yeomha River.
Before we set off on our walking journey,
let's take a look around the starting point at Daemyung Port,
where we encounter the unique historical space of Kimpo Naval Park.
Although we cannot enter the retired warship 'Unbong' due to ongoing safety inspections,
the open outdoor plaza and coastal walking path are refreshing and perfect for a light stroll before departure.
After savoring the harbor's sea breeze and the park's tranquility,
it's time to move towards the Peace Trail that runs along the barbed wire.
As we walk past Daemyung Port, the serene scenery of the Yeomha River unfolds before us.
The Yeomha River means 'river of saltwater',
and it makes one wonder, 'Does the river really taste salty?'
This area is where seawater and freshwater meet,
also known as the 'Ganghwa Strait'.
Thanks to this geographical feature, if you visit at the right tide,
you can observe vast mudflats and migratory birds up close.
While the barbed wire stretches along the path,
the calm river flowing beyond it and the beautiful scenery of Ganghwa Island
help to distance the noise of the city, bringing peace to the mind.
As we walk against the cool breeze over the silvery river,
we naturally feel the deep resonance and charm unique to the Yeomha River Barbed Wire Trail.
Walking along the Yeomha River Barbed Wire Trail,
we reach Deokpojin, a coastal defense fortress from the Joseon Dynasty,
which guarded the sea route to Seoul.
This historical battleground witnessed fierce confrontations
against French and American forces during the Byeongin and Sinmi invasions.
The atmosphere here transcends mere historical relics,
making one feel the weight of time endured in this space.
As we stand quietly in front of the fortress,
the heavy burden of time this place has withstood resonates with us.
Amidst the remains of the fort and the exhibition space of artifacts,
the historical significance is vividly felt.
The Yeomha River Barbed Wire Trail offers a chance to experience both the coastal scenery and historical sites,
making Deokpojin one of the most symbolic locations along Course 1.
The trail allows for close encounters with the natural ecology of the border area.
As we walk, we can easily spot migratory birds taking flight and expansive mudflat landscapes.
As we approach the Swaeam-ri and Goyang-ri rest areas,
the tranquil atmosphere provides a perfect spot to appreciate the natural scenery.
Feeling the cool breeze from the Yeomha River allows us to momentarily set aside our busy thoughts.
This beautiful trail has been recognized as one of the '100 Non-Contact Tourist Destinations' by the Korea Tourism Organization.
As we near the end of the course, the scenery of Mt. Munsu unfolds, altering the trail's ambiance.
At the end of the long barbed wire path, the views leave a lasting impression.
Throughout the trail, stamp boxes are installed for completion certification, adding to the enjoyment of the journey.
Basic amenities such as signposts, rest areas, and restrooms are well-maintained for convenience.
After completing the walk, you can conveniently return to Daemyung Port parking lot using bus 96 from Seongdong Checkpoint.
This trail is also easily accessible by car and public transport, making it a recommended weekend outing.
As we walk along the barbed wire trail, the atmosphere transforms from a symbol of division to one of peace.
The scenery along the Yeomha River and the gentle breeze calm the mind throughout the walk.
Especially between Daemyung Port and Deokpojin, the connection between the past and present feels seamless.
Walking this path, where traces of a fierce past meet today's reality, makes it all the more special.
This weekend, take a walk along the Kimpo Peace Trail Course 1,
and immerse yourself in the vibrancy of Daemyung Port, the history of Deokpojin,
and the tranquility of the Yeomha River.
